Depends on what you'll be using it for;around town or 'off road' or mixture of both?

Does indeed depend on what you want to do. But a few general thoughts:

  1. Pick up the bike before you buy it - how much it wieghs makes a big difference to how easier it is to ride.
  1. Make sure you take it for a ride before you buy - bikes come in many different sizes (not just hieght from ground but length as well) and you need to make sure that the one you are looking at buying is a comfortable fit for you.
  1. Go to a bike shop (not somewhere like Halfords) as they will be able to tell you a lot more about what is available.
  1. Do you really want a women's bike and if so, why? That will really limit your options.
  1. There are some great second hand deals to be had with bikes - you could get a much better bike for your money. However, as with everything it is possible to really trash a bike (to the extent it snaps in 2 when riding it), so if you do want a second hand one, do you know anyone who is a cycling enthusiast who could do to look at something with you?
