I feel like I am in a nightmare with recurring dental issues and would appreciate any advice.
I have a lower right molar which has been bothering me on and off since June. The tooth has a big filling, and is the one next to the wisdom tooth - the tooth in front was extracted after repeated abscesses and a failed root canal about 15 years ago.
The dentist has examined and x-rayed the tooth numerous times and found nothing wrong. In August she drilled out and replaced a bit of the filling. I got a few weeks pain-free before it started up again. My last x-ray was a fortnight ago, and I last saw the dentist last Thursday - she gave me antibiotics and suggested it could be a sinus problem. I thought this was unlikely but took them anyway. The tooth is still really painful and the antibiotics are finished today.
I'm a recent clencher due to stress,, and the dentist says the pain is just due to clenching. I have a nightguard which was fitted after these problems started - I wear it every night, all night.
I am due to go back in a fortnight because my dentist is on holiday until then, but I am not sure I will last that long. The pain is around the front of the tooth, constant, and sharp rather than throbbing. The tooth actually doesn't hurt more if I eat on it. Is it worth ringing in to see if someone else can see me? I am a nervous patient and worried because I have been at the dentist more in the last six months than the rest of my life, and I am scared the tooth might need extracted. I had the matching tooth extracted in July after a broken filling/root canal which never settled because one canal couldn't be found. (I am an NHS patient in a mainly private practice, but am willing to pay privately to save the tooth/get out of pain.)
Thanks for reading this massive essay if you did! (I should also say that I really do respect and trust my dentist, but there is definitely something going on with this tooth, even I feel it's not showing up.)
