Terrified I have cancer

After almost 3 month of constant bleeding despite being on the pill the doctors took swabs this morning and told me I have cervical erosion and I’ve been given an urgent cancer referral.

I feel sick Sad the doctor told me not to worry and that the only reason they have put it through as a cancer referral is so that I get seen sooner but I could tell she was just trying to make me feel better.

Has anyone been through this? I’m just waiting for a phone call for the hospital appointment

I've been through it. The waiting for appointments and results, is just horrible. Best advice to give you is to keep busy and do as many normal, nice things as possible. You will worry, there's no point anyone telling you not to but you can get through it. I did. 💐

A cervical erosion isn't cancer. A GP is extremely unlikely to be able to see that anyone has cervical cancer. She is referring you so they can look at your cervix under a microscope and check it out. Try not to worry. It is much more likely the bleeding is the cervical erosion - which can bleed, or a polyp or something totally benign.

Thanks for the reassurance Flowers I’m going to try and keep busy and stay away from google for the time being

It's not a 'cancer referral'. It is an appt under the '2 -week rule' for ANY unexplained bleeding or other symptoms which WORST POSSIBLE SCENARIO could possibly be cancer.

Please stop thinking of it as a cancer referral. it's not.

Erosions are very very common.

Ropsleybunny · 02/10/2017 18:59

I've been through the whole two week referral system and everyone tells you not to worry. Could I just politely point out that telling people not to worry is not only pointless but it can make you feel inadequate because you are worrying and it's impossible not to.

The best advice I got was to keep busy, do lots of normal things and do plenty of extra nice stuff.

Not sure if its the same but I had/have lots of on off irregular bleeding and had to have a test under a GA including for cancer. It wasn't cancerous but was caused by a large fibroid.

purpleunicorns · 03/10/2017 19:27

I’ve got my fingers and everything else crossed that it is just fibroids. I still haven’t had a phone call with an appointment date so I’ll give them a ring first thing tomorrow. It’s the waiting around that seems to be making it worse, although my house is totally spotless as keeping busy keeps my mind off things Grin

I’ve got my appointment date through for the 18th October and it’s with a gynaecological oncologist Sad has anybody else been to see one and it hasn’t turned out to be cancer? Absolutely bricking it now

I googled it for you. A referal to a
gynaecological oncologist doesn't mean you have cancer. A referal info sheet I found said over 70% of people seen did not have cancer.

Like somone else has said. They refer to to this specialist so that if cancer is detected there's no more waiting around to be referred to oncology.

purpleunicorns · 04/10/2017 16:34

Thankyou Flowers not much I can do until the appointment, just hope it’s not weeks before I get my results back from that. I’ll be bald at this rate with the stress Confused
