We went to the garden centre yesterday and this morning i noticed my ds1 [2] has got quite a few splinters in his hand!
He wont let me get them out. Any ideas?

My mum used to have me blow on the splinter while she was removing it. I do this with my children - it's quite effective, both as distraction for them and as a slight pain reliever. But at 2 he may be too young to co-operate in this way. I have in the past left splinters alone, just kept an eye on them. If they don't cause him pain, and if there is no inflamation around them, then they can safely be left to come out by themselves.

Bribery may also be considered .

I have also, once, had to take my dd to the out-of-ours doctor to remove a nasty splinter from her foot as whe wouldn't co-operate with me. I was quite embarrassed! But it was deep and painful for her, so had to come out - took two of us to hold her down, plus the doctor using a freezing spray on her foot, to extract a half-centimetre splinter. So I wasn't embarrassed any more when I saw what had come out.

They are quite near the surface but hrere are so many that im not sure if i should call the out of hours surgery. ONe of them is big and looks quite red. I tried to push it out but its hard to tell which way they went in.

He obviously finds it painful when i try to get it out, should i just leave it?

I had a bad splinter only last week - could not reach it, so I looked up a rememdy on the internet, and b*gger me it really worked!

Put some honey on each of the splinters, cover each splinter with a plaster and leave till tommorrow. The honey should draw the splinters to the surface.

Hope it helps!
