Did you know this about brown bread - important for veggies!

Eating brown bread inhibits the uptake of iron and zinc! I knew tea and coffee did, but brown bread? It's supposed to be good for you FGS!

Veggies would be better off with white.

do you mean brown or wholemeal?

blossomsmine · 06/04/2007 18:17

This is really annoying! I think i need more iron and i am also a veggie who eats brown bread.....so what do i do then...??

hoorayitseasterhols · 06/04/2007 18:25

eat the brown bread at separate times from the iron containing foods and eat things with vitamin c such as tomatoes and oranges at same time as iron containing food. It only interacts in the stomach, not once it is absorbed into blood

CorrieDale · 06/04/2007 18:28

Is it just bread or any wholemeal type thing?

White bread also good for those (like me) who have calcium shortages.

Back to the old adage that a little bit of everything....

I just get my fibre elsewhere (eg brown rice).

But wholemeal bread contains iron, it's in the wheatgerm. It's probably a case of not eating too much fibre in general as that sweeps minerals out of the body. It's probably OK if you eat white pasta and things. Brown rice is another one that's supposed to stop mineral absorption apparently. Everything in moderation is probably the key.
