toddler with itchy anus

Sorry to be so graphic. Dd, 21 months, for about 2 weeks has had a sore red itchy anus which clearly annoys her as she's always trying to scratch it through her nappy and goes mad to get at it when I'm changing her. She gets very upset at nappy changing time and won't let me wipe her properly and also gets upset when getting into the bath. It's not nappy rash, doesn't look like it and isn't responding at all to nappy rash creams / leaving nappy off etc. It's focused round the anal area and I think her genitals might also be a bit red but she won't really let me look there. It's bright red with red spots going out towards the edges of the sore point. Should I take her to the GP? Any creams anyone can recommend apart from the usual nappy ones? Might it be thrush?

Hi everyone, just googled 'toddler with itchy anus' and this thread came up. My toddler (who is potty training so walking around with no nappy) just came to me with hands covered in blood, all the way up to her wrists....You can imagine my reaction....anyway turns out she has been scratching her bum and burst a blood vessel. After some more investigation she has done some damage to her the 'front of her bum' too Over the last 2 weeks she has had a red rash down, round and up her bum and we were told that it is from her pull ups. We have an emergency appointment this afternoon, so I do hope we get some answers too! I can see this is going to affect the potty training because she wants her nappy on all the time. The thought of her making a wee makes ME whince. I hope the doc can presribe something to soothe it.
