poor ds1. Googling suggests a recovery period of up tp 6 weeks.

Transient Synovitis /Post Viral Arthritis

Arthritis can occur 1-3 weeks after a viral illness. Typical causative organisms are rubella, mumps, parvovirus and hepatitis B. Many transient arthritises are labelled ?post-viral? as it is usually possible to obtain a history of a recent viral illness in a child. An over-reactive immune response to the virus is usually blamed. The pain and swelling should settle within 6 weeks. Management involves:

  1. excluding other causes that require more urgent treatment (e.g. septic arthritis, trauma, involvement of bone/soft tissue adjacent to the joint) by history, examination and, if necessary, investigation
  2. analgesia/anti-inflammatory medication (e.g. ibuprofen at anti-inflammatory doses if necessary)
  3. reviewing the child at six weeks to ensure the problem has settled.
noddyholder · 04/04/2007 17:52

It is usually when the body has produced a reaction to a virus and once the immune system has dealt with the virus it has left over fighting power looking for something to destroy or attack and so it goes for the joints.

OrvilleRedenbacher · 04/04/2007 17:52

6 WEEKS!!!!

hes a long lanky runner about kind of kid

OP posts:
littleEasterlapin · 04/04/2007 17:53

yes, but that's UP TO 6 weeks. Could be much less

OrvilleRedenbacher · 04/04/2007 17:53

ill do a deal on 6 hours

OP posts:
littleEasterlapin · 04/04/2007 17:56

more googling says "a few days to several weeks" - hopefully the former

VeniVidiVickiQV · 04/04/2007 17:56

oh bugger coddy.

He needs to rest. LOTS.

my brother had a post viral reaction to something. Developed into Henoch Schoenline Purpurrea. Cause swelling of the joints, abdominal pain, blood blisters on the joints and in the bowels. Was in hospital for 6 weeks.

Its very rare, thankfully.

OrvilleRedenbacher · 04/04/2007 17:57

oh GOD this is geting WORSE!!

OP posts:
littleEasterlapin · 04/04/2007 17:59

don't panic, he'll probably be fine. Does he have swollen joints?

hunkermunker · 04/04/2007 18:04

Oh, God, poor thing - yes, I had it and badly. But listen, women get it worse. Children get it more mildly (I'm generalising, but hold onto him having two things in his favour so far, OK?).

What virus has he had? How bad are his joints? When I initially got it, I couldn't turn over in bed without screaming, or walk at all. It got progressively better from there, albeit with relapses.

I am not saying this to scare you, I'm saying it because if his isn't this bad now, it's likely to get better far more quickly. Is this any comfort to you at all?

Poor lamb - I really hope he gets better very quickly. Ibuprofen and Calpol the best thing for him, plus rest.

hunkermunker · 04/04/2007 18:05

I had Human Parvovirus B19, otherwise known as slapped cheek, otherwise known as Fifth's Disease.

OrvilleRedenbacher · 04/04/2007 18:19

he had a cough

ok so i rang finbar - whose dd is ds1s best mate.
she was ill last week - had the same cahes in the same places
