DH has a cold/flu/something ... should he be going to the GP or something?

He's been (somewhat) ill for a few weeks or a month. The last few days, he's been bedridden, more or less. Quite warm, sore throat, no energy etc etc. Appetite broken, all the stuff you'd expect.

He called the GPs yesterday, but they didn't have any appointments until next week (when we are away). He took yesterday and today off work.

Is it worth him going to the drop-in centre or trying to get an emergency appointment? I suspect they won't do anything for him. He worries it's tb or pneumonia, but it doesn't really sound like either to me - his chest is clear, to my amateur ear.

hi - sounds like what my DH has had - doctor said it was viral so plenty of fluids, paracetamol, ibuprofen and rest. If he has a productive cough (ie green stuff) then i would say he may need to see a GP

LilyLoo · 03/04/2007 13:17

IMO think he needs to see GP as a month seems quite a long time. And it seems he is getting worse as time goes on.

is he coughing up gunk? if he isn't it will be viral, and there is nothing the medics can do for a virus.

If he is couching up gunk and it is green, it will be a chest infection, that can be treated with antibiotics. If he is otherwise a well man, and doesn't have any underlying medical problems going to A and E will be a waste of everyones time.

If his breating is laboured, and if his lips go a blueish tinge, get him to A and E.

Take ibuprofen and paracetamol to bring down the tem, lots of fluids, bed rest.

Talk to NHS direct to get confirmation, I'm not a doc!

Oh, his breathing is fine, and blue lips etc, I know is A+E. I'll ask about gunk. Over the last month, he's certainly coughed up stuff, but I don't know if he's coughing up anything now.

He was coughing up green stuff, he did go on, they said 'it's viral' and sent him home again.

He seems a bit perkier today, actually. On the other hand, I feel like death warmed over. I was fine earlier today, and now my throat really hurts and I'm convinced I'm freezing to death.

I've had it the last few days, it is fairly vile.

NotQuiteCockney · 03/04/2007 18:21

We've both been ill all month. I lost my voice. Neither of us has been entirely well, all month. Well, I felt pretty good earlier today, but not now.

Sore throat, swolen glands, sinuses full of crud that looks rather like putty, running a tem, feel like shit.

Guess its a virus
