How do I know if it's whooping cough?

Hi all, DS (nearly 4) has been having a bad cough now, on and off, for about 10 weeks as far as I can figure it out.
It keeps coming back for a few days, really badly, then it'll just lift and he'll be Ok for a week or two. Then back again, and so on.
He's often sleepless with it, won't eat and if he does it tends to come back up when he has a coughing fit. (He's always been sick when he's had coughs before, so I'm not sure this indicates much?)
He seems fairly 'normal' in between fits, but at night it can go on for hours, neither of us gets any sleep and I'm 30wks Pg. so no fun really - I'd still rather be me than DS, though, it sounds so bad, poor mite.
I did have a bad cough too when he first had this, mine went on a few weeks but has gone now. His keeps coming back.
We're heading to the docs this afternoon as I think something this persistent should be checked out...but anyone else had experience of whooping cough - and does it sound like this?
BTW he was vaxed as per NHS usual timing - 1,2 & 3 months - not had his booster yet - and he doesn't always make a 'whooping' sound but sometimes it sounds a bit like that. He also occasionally seems to have a temperature with the cough.
Thanks in advance!

Hiya
I remember having whooping cough, and it was all day and night. It was a whooping type sound iykwim.

But, I also know that my ds had a cough that seemed to last for months. We went to the dr very early on with it, and was told it is a type of virus that was going around at the time.
