Does reading with a torch in bed really damage childrens' eyesight?

Not sure if this is an old wives tale. DD1 3.5 yo likes to look at the bedtime story we've just read with a torch for a whle before falling asleep...

i asked optician about this and he siad it is old wives tale as is sitting too close to the TV. he said that it wouldn't harm a child's eyes unless they sat 2 inches away from the TV for many hours a day.
reading in poor light can even be of benefit he reckons as it strengthens the muscles.

Well I used to read with a torch in bed as a child, i'm 30 and my eyesight is fine.
