Scary reaction to codeine.

I had a moderately bad headache earlier today , but had run out of ibruprofen and paracetamol. I found some codeine in the medicine cabinet and took 2 30mg tablets. Within 20 minutes I was sweating, feeling numb , dizzy with tingling sensations on my teeth and felt very nauseous. An hour later, I still felt just as bad and then started vomiting almost constantly for around 20 minutes. I then fell into a deep sleep for several hours. Has anyone else ever reacted to these tablets like this? I'm usually tolerant of most medications but this was awful. I'm better now, although still a little tender from vomiting so much.

It was very unwise of you to swallow two tablets without reading the dosage information Shock

I remember feeling spaced out and weird after taking two Nurofen Plus, when the recommended dose was one.

Oh well, lesson learned eh?

Blush at one point I was on 60mg dihydrocodeine x 4, 5mg diazepam, full dose naproxen and full dose of paracetamol. Plus oramorph. And not even sleepy Grin
I'm a redhead though with a weird painkiller tolerance

I had a bad experience with Night Nurse. I thought I'd give it a go after a really bad night with only 2 hrs sleep. I got up in the night and collapsed on the floor, it was like I had been drugged.I needed help to get back to bed, thank God I wasn't on my own. It was really scary. I binned the rest of the packet the next day and will never ever take it again. Be warned.

I used to mess around with codeine recreationally, but the one time I took for extreme back pain caused by trauma (not prescribed, but..) I ended up in A&E as we thought I was having a heart attack. I completely shut down except for cries for an ambulance and writhing around. I'd had a reaction to it causing a coronary artery spasm, a rare side effect.

Nasty stuff.

Ollivander you sound like me - although when I took similar (with the addition of a tramadol) I was at the stage of hallucinating and nurses taking me to the toilet , checking obs a lot etc (I was in hospital already thankfully).

I am allergic to codiene it's the only thing I am allergic to xx

That is a high dose for someone not opioid tolerant. Please don't take drugs not prescribed for you it is dangerous and could interact with anything else you are taking.

I am opioid tolerant and that dose would not affect me, I take it regularly along with oxynorm/oxycontin, but it was a gradual build up, and is prescribed for me.

Flatpackback, you had been drugged.

Codeine is an opiate, 60mg is a huge dose for someone who isn't used to them.
I'm presuming they were a prescription for someone else? If so, you should completely avoid. The right dose for them is not always going to be the right dose for you.

Doesn't sound like an allergic reaction, just sounds like you took way too much. I've had to have codeine a number of times and it can make me feel quite out of it even on low dose.

If you need stronger pain relief you can buy low dose co-codamol (mix of paracetamol + codeine) over the counter.
