Any dentists about? Weird hard lump above tooth.

(I am going to ring for a dental appointment tomorrow).

Sitting on the bed earlier while I was reading I was rubbing my finger along the gum on the top of my mouth (no idea why but there you go...). I felt what is a very hard very small lump above my pointy front tooth on the outside of the gum above the tooth. I immediately thought abscess and looked in the mirror but it isn't red or sore at all. It looks like part of the gum, if you press on it it goes white like bone. It feels like bone! But it is definitely a little tiny lump, like a very small pea. I've no idea how long it's been there, it's purely by accident I found it. I don't have the same on the other side.

Any ideas?

I tried taking a photo and it won't show up. I have quite bad health anxiety anyway so I'm in a panic thinking it's mouth cancer... HmmBlush

I'm 36, non smoker, teetotal, healthy weight if that makes any difference....!

Is it definitely not the root of your tooth? May not be as prominent on the other side due to the angle?

Ridingthegravytrain · 06/08/2017 19:52

Has the tooth it is above been hurting or feeling weird at all?

I only ask because I had this and then it got bigger and the tooth below felt different from the other teeth and then an x ray showed an abscess below the root and the hard lump was where the bone was expanding from the pressure of the abscess

I have one in my mouth. Feels like bone and not painful at all. Asked the dentist about it and whilst I can't remember the name for it apparently it's perfectly normal.

Appraiser · 06/08/2017 19:55

I have this at the bottom of my mouth and was told it was part of the root of the tooth. Only loose concern dentist had was that when i am older I maybe wouldn't be able to wear dentures.

Because you've just found it, you will constantly run your tongue on it! Leave it 😀

Fairylea · 06/08/2017 19:58

Thanks for the replies - feeling quite reassured! Wish I had never touched it now! I'm not sure if it's the actual tooth or not, it might be...?! It seems like it's right at the top of the tooth where it enters the gum. Nothing has felt sore or uncomfortable. Maybe it is just some weird normal thing. How odd. Confused

No idea if this is the same thing but I once grew a lump under my tongue and was terrified. Went to the dentist and he told me it was in fact extra bone I grew and that I had a big one on the roof of my mouth. I always thought that was the normal shape for everyone's mouths but have since learned it's not. I later grew another lump of bone on the opposite side under my tongue. My dentist says it's perfectly normal. ☺️

Fairylea · 07/08/2017 07:55

That is so strange! Aren't bodies weird! Glad it's all normal.

I'm going to try and get a dentist appointment for some time this week just to put my mind at rest but I do think it's probably one of the things people have posted about. Thanks all.

I also have one. Dentist x rayed it and said it is bone ( I think ) but definitely nothing sinister.
I have had mine for years and it hasn't gotten any bigger.

Fairylea · 08/08/2017 15:33

Hi all,

I went to the dentist this morning and he examined it and did an x Ray and said it's nothing to worry about and just one of those funny things! He said sometimes the bone does decide to grow a bit denser for no reason whatsoever. So there we go...! But at least it's nothing sinister. Grin

I’ve just been reading your post and wondered what the outcome from the dentist was. I have a small bump above my side tooth it looks white like a part of the bone but there is definitely a bump and it’s been the for some months?

Ggina55 · 30/08/2018 22:06

I was just reading your post about the bump you found on your gum can I ask was yours the same colour as your gum or white? Thanks

BombayThanksgiving · 06/09/2018 20:27

I found one of these bumps tonight! Mine's small, white, and as PPs have said, feels just like bone. Plus it's almost exactly where the root should be. No pain at all, although the gum around that tooth has always been a bit inflamed (dentist isn't concerned there, just tells me to floss more!). I wonder what it is?

MrsMoastyToasty · 07/09/2018 20:54

It sounds like a torus mandibularis. I have one and my dentist wrote it down for me so I could look it up.

Ggina55 · 08/09/2018 08:35

I was told by the dentist that it was nothing sinister so that was a relief it just seems odd that there’s a white spot at the top of the gum, as you said mine is also right at the top of the tooth

jeansasinthetrousers · 11/12/2018 11:35

I’m in the same boat. Just found one yesterday about a cm above my left top canine by the root. No pain and flesh colours skin but looks white underneath. About the size of a small ball bearing and really hard. Have no idea how long it’s been there but now can’t leave it alone. I have a dentist app on Saturday. Really hope it’s nothing sinister!

Ggina55 · 11/12/2018 18:14

I have been to the dentist a few times now and it’s definitely nothing to worry about he said he sees lots like this and not to try and diagnose yourself on the internet

How did it go?
