Hi,

What does a "sunken fontanelle" feel / look like?

DS is still vomitting on and off, but is weeing and pooing and is alert.

I don't think he is dehydrated yet, and will call for a GP's appt at 8.

What does a "sunken fontanelle" are feel like?

Thx

I think you just see it on top of the head and if it was sunken you would know straight away.

Hope he's OK.

It feels like a dent on the top of the head. You can usually see it too unless ds has lots of hair.

Concave, about the size of a 10p. You're right to contact GP, even if you're just marginally worried. Is ds taking plenty of fluids, despite the chucking up?

The size can actually vary according to age of child. A newborn babies fontanelle is actually quite a bit larger than a 10p. DD3s is about the size of a 10p now at 11m.

Hi, well I took DS to dr and he said so long as he is weeing he will be fine.

I asked about the sunken fontanelle and he said that it is "end stage", that by that stage he would have other signs and that by then I would have sought further medical attention.

He said if he was dehydrated he wouldn't be weeing, that his mouth would be dry, that his eyes would be sunken and that his skin turgur (pinch test) would not be normal.

He suggested small feeds often and to supplement each feed with a small amount (like a spoonful) of water.

Best thing was...I told him we are flying to Oz on Sunday and HE was asking ME for advice on flying with babies / toddlers!!!!

So feeling much happier and more relaxed too (and DS hasn't been sick since about 7am!)
