For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and more detailed information here

I'm very that you would suggest sullying our helathy thread in this manner

zippitippitoes · 27/03/2007 13:47

I have had my prawns, guacamole, cottage cheese, herb salad, tomatoes and cucumber and mayonnaise lunch

shall now brave the new pears

interesting note apparently williams peras have only two thirds the sugar and calories of comice pears

Overrun · 27/03/2007 16:27

Zippie - you learn something new every day. I will go for the William ones in future

zippitippitoes · 27/03/2007 16:30

I got this info from....tescos packaging so it is not verified by a third party

I have just had my pear

Overrun · 27/03/2007 16:35

ARgh, bloody Tescos I shall ignore my newfound knowledge on principle now. Btw, which one is an English variety if any? I don't really know much about pears

zippitippitoes · 27/03/2007 16:37

I think I spied the word argentina on mine

(see zippi fraud earlier)

but potentially they should both all be able to be english

Overrun · 27/03/2007 16:39

When is the pear season then? Tesco so rarely have local produce, despite their recent much publicised campaign about using more local producers

StrangeTown · 27/03/2007 20:58

Hello all,

I am very much liking the tone of the thread this week. Restive, yet encouraging.

Had lots of salad stuff for tea. Sadly have only purchased fruit today, not eaten it. Will try harder tomorrow in this matter.

I am also FED UP with excercise. I really couldn't be bothered to drag myself to netball this week, I made it there but was crap. Am v tired - what are good energy foods? Those raw oats the green one goes on about?

FrannyandZooey · 27/03/2007 21:02

Energy foods - oats are indeed good for slow release of energy - pumpkin and sunflower seeds good for general vitality, beansprouts, nuts, citrus, and anything proteiny

Overrun and zippi you have a good line in entertaining banter

oh, and pear facts

my mother has been here, I cannot be held answerable for anything I may have done, but I would think biting one's lip probably burns quite a few calories so I am claiming 5 hours of strenuous activity

zippitippitoes · 27/03/2007 21:04

ds is home from college and lloks like gene's son off life on mars tis very weird

FrannyandZooey · 27/03/2007 21:09

No talking about tv because it makes me feel not in the cool gang and I may cry

zippi chicken is NOT a vegetable, does that help?

pls describe "super granola"

OP posts:
lionheart · 27/03/2007 21:16

I am listening to Joni M on Radio 2. Does that help?

Managed 10 yesterday, 8 so far today.

Have to find some items from the list that don't take up so much room 'cos I can barely move.

zippitippitoes · 27/03/2007 21:21

sorry frannhy

super granola is in a shiny balck and gold bag and costs more than 3.00

I'm sure I wouldn't have bought it if it had sugar in but it does taste as though it does so i can't look at the ingredients

StrangeTown · 27/03/2007 21:29

I have extolled on the virtues on homemade Granola before. I use Nigellas recipe. (Franny - this will be out of bounds for you as it involves the oven and I know you prefer the hob
Can't eat it at the moment as it has too many nuts in, so need an alternative, got lots of seeds though, so could just have oats, seeds and a banana for brek tomorrow, Hmmmm, I've really not sold myself on that.

Maybe just a seedy bagel then...

FrannyandZooey · 27/03/2007 21:30

Oh I thought you might have made it yourself with some of Greeny's RAW oats

Lionheart you are proving a great addition to the thread

but

whereohwhereohwhereohwhere is Filly?

I don't know why my italics are not working

FrannyandZooey · 27/03/2007 21:31

my granola recipe is sugar free, I will go and hunt for it

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 27/03/2007 21:31

you have to put them round each word ST

it's a PITA

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 27/03/2007 21:32

Ta-daah

and

yum

3 cups oats
1 cup wheatgerm
1/4 cup linseed
1/4 cup sesame seeds
1/4 cup sunflower seeds
4 tbsp ground almonds
1 tbsp barley malt
1 tbsp molasses (dissolve this and the barley malt in a little hot water otherwise it is too sticky)
1/4 cup olive oil
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp ground cinnamon
2 cups raisins
Half cup dessicated coconut

Combine barley malt, molasses, oil, vanilla and cinnamon in a bowl. Mix all else except raisins and coconut in another bowl. Mix wet with dry. Stir well until all coated. Spread onto 2 baking trays and bake at 180 / gm 4 for 20 mins, stirring after 10 mins.
Add raisins and coconut and allow to cool. Place in airtight tin or jar in the fridge. Serve with milk as usual.

Ah! Of course, me being in IT and all...

StrangeTown · 27/03/2007 21:37

Sounds gorg Franny and less nutty than Nigellas. I could just leave almonds out. Think I've got molasses, but not barley malt. I reckon honey/syrup would give same consistency, but diff flavour. Will give it a go for next batch.

lionheart · 27/03/2007 21:39

God, that sounds so good, cinnamon, molasses, barley ....'tis poetic.

StrangeTown · 27/03/2007 21:42

Franny - your expertise is required by some poor, inexperienced mooncupper in the Health section...

FrannyandZooey · 27/03/2007 21:47

oh dear am not really very good at the troubleshooting aspect of Mooncuppery...will try though

yes the recipe is really good IMO and children enjoy helping to make it

would be good for energy levels I reckon
