Weird taste in mouth. I know what you're going to say...

I'm NOT pregnant. At least, I've had this for about 2 weeks - since well before I ovulated - so seems unlikely. No unprotected sex. Oh, and I'm 44.

But it's vile. Gets worse as the day goes on - alleviated by sweet tastes but then back with a vengeance. I am pretty tired and run down (teacher, so end v much insight). Anyone any experience?

have you recently eaten pine nuts? some have the effect of creating a really unpleasant taste - it's not there all the time, it comes when you eat something and can't be masked or got rid of. It's really horrible and I'm afraid takes ages to get rid of.

Thishatisnotmine · 19/07/2017 19:58

Oooo yeah, pine nut mouth. I stopped buying pine nuts for ages when I heard about that. I think it is a bitter taste it leaves?

newtlover · 19/07/2017 19:58

this explains it

Ridingthegravytrain · 19/07/2017 20:02

Oral thrush? I had this and weird taste was my only symptom. Everything I ate that was savoury tasted vile. Daktarin and corsodyl cleared it up

Mooey89 · 19/07/2017 20:03

I get this when I have sinusitis- do you have any coldy symptoms??

KeiraTwiceKnightley · 19/07/2017 20:05

Pine nut thing sounds interesting, newt lover (are you Ken Livingstone, btw?😉). Can't think of a time I ate them but might've have pesto, I suppose. Also oral thrush - am prone to the foof variety so possible. I'll try corsodyl.

Acid reflux gives me a nasty taste in my mouth. Made worse by stress.

newtlover · 19/07/2017 22:43

Red Ken? Grin
No, but I was genuinely excited when I found a newt in my pond, hence the name - sad, I know.

Might be worth testing blood sugar levels as diabetes can affect sense of taste, often described as having metallic taste in mouth.

KeiraTwiceKnightley · 21/07/2017 21:46

Spoke to dr today, decided most likely oral thrush so have anti-bs. Got to go back if no better by weds.

Tooth infection

willdoitinaminute · 21/07/2017 22:01

Iron deficiency anaemia can give you a metallic taste and pine nuts is a well known cause of weary taste. Oral thrush should not be treated with antibiotics as they often cause thrush. You need anti fungals. Also not sure corsodyl would be my go to mouth wash. Oral thrush is easy to diagnose clinically but impossible via a phone consult unless you had a video consult with GP. Oral thrush causes diffuse white spots in cheek and sometimes white plaques on the tongue.
Alternatively you may have a sensitivity to toothpaste. The 'total' toothpastes have a polymer in them that adhere the paste to your teeth and gums so that active ingredients are not washed away quickly. Unfortunately they also adhere the sodium laurel sulphate to the inside of your mouth as well. SLS is a known allergen (soap) so if you have a skin sensitive to washing powders and skin products you are more likely to get a reaction in your mouth. Look for toothpastes without SLS, sensodyne make a few types without it.

*pine nuts are a well known cause of weird taste

Gingernaut · 21/07/2017 22:08

Vitamin B or a mineral deficiency (zinc, magnesium or iron) are possibilities.

Medication including antibiotics and illnesses like sinusitis or acid reflux.

BamburyFuriou3 · 21/07/2017 22:13

Tonsil stones?

lazycrazyhazy · 21/07/2017 23:39

I had something similar. Do you get cold sores? If so it could be related to that. I get them when run down and had this taste thing sometimes accompanied by a 'mouth on fire' sensation. GP thought was herpes related and prescribed long course of oral Zovirax and I have to say that worked.

I also had fantasy smells for a while which also responded to Zovirax. The body is weird!
