CT scan: what to expect and how long for results?

Just got the call to say my ct scan is booked in on Saturday for something an x-ray picked up on my lung. Just hoping to get some insight as to what to expect and how long your results took to get back to you? The consultant said 2 days but is that realistic? x

This is my experience as a patient not a HCP.

You will probably have a cannula inserted into your hand for contrast dye. You will lie on a bed with your arms stretched over your head. Not every CT scan uses contrast but I have had chest ones and they have used it.

During the scan the bed will move backwards and forwards through an arch that looks like a donut. You will not be fully enclosed. The machine will make some whirring noises but it is less noisy than an MRI.

The radiographers will leave the room during the scan but they will be checking on you through a window. They will be able to speak to you through an intercom and you can speak back.

If contrast is used you will be told when they are using it. It gives a warm flushing feeling, a sense that you need to pee and a metallic taste in the mouth. This only lasts for a few seconds. During the scan you may be asked to hold your breath at particular times and you will need to lie still.

In terms of results, the consultant may get them in 2 days, but sometimes you need to wait for them to be discussed. It depends on the hospital so be guided by what you have been told.

That's a spot on desc to my experience too. I was actually warned that when they use the contrast it might make you actually feel as if you have peed yourself.

It took about 20/30 mins

Just to add, the appointment might take 29 minutes, but each actual scan only takes a few seconds.

Thanks ladies, the scan doesn't sound too bad. I'm just very nervous about the results as I have convinced myself its going to be cancer x

I had a CT on June 27 th .Got a follow up appointment on August 25 th !! When I asked the consultants secretary why so long she said if if was anything serious you would be in sooner :-/ . Hope yours goes OK and is much quicker !

Evizza · 13/07/2017 20:16

Wow...that long of a wait would drive me crazy! I guess if there was anything to worry about then they would want you to be seen sooner than August? A long time to be left worrying though xx

Yeah it is . I would be happy with a letter. His secretary did say he would have called me in sooner if they found anything sinister . Not good for the old anxiety ! My GP is going to see if she can get any information before then ! Hope yours goes OK :-)
