Does anyone else get a sore tongue when they eat rich food?

I get this often and have only met one other person with the same problem. It happens if I eat things like pineapple, hummus, tomatoes with balsamic vinegar. When I was a child, it would be certain sweets.
All,r Lund the edge of my tongue goes inflamed and feels ab it like I'm getting chilli burns.
Anyone know what the sensitivity means? Am I deficient in something?

Sounds like oral allergy syndrome

Yvetteballs · 15/06/2017 19:53

Thanks demented. Just looked that up. I don't get any of the listed reactions Apart from the sore tongue. It seems to be things there are highly acidic.

I get a really sore tongue after eating fresh pineapple and walnuts.

Livedandlearned · 15/06/2017 19:57

My dh does, it's called geographic tongue though this may not be what you have.

mortificado · 15/06/2017 19:59

I get sore and itchy mouth when I get pineapples kiwi etc and plums and apples at certain times of the year.
Very annoying!

But does it mean we should avoid them completely?

rachyconks · 15/06/2017 20:05

Yes I get it! Pineapple, kiwi, certain sweets - especially fizzy ones. Anything acidic. Really annoying and it feels like my tongue is itchy but sore at the same time!

Backingvocals · 15/06/2017 20:07

Yes I get this and have geographic tongue. Tomatoes, walnuts, pineapple all set me off. And Lebanese tabouleh for some reason.

putdownyourphone · 15/06/2017 20:08

Yes - walnuts, pineapple and kiwi fruits hurt my tongue

Pollaidh · 15/06/2017 20:21

I have geographic tongue.

Tomatoes, walnuts, pineapple (fresh, but tinned seems ok, weirdly) and a herb I've yet to pin down all trigger soreness and burning, sometimes itching.

Kiwi causes full on swelling, on the other hand, even the tiniest amount.

Tabbouleh has tomatoes in it.

LakeFlyPie · 15/06/2017 21:42

Yes, I get this with all of the foods you describe but not every time I eat them.
Also have geographic tongue.
Doesn't seem as bad as it was in my teens though (in 40s now)

Yvetteballs · 15/06/2017 22:55

I will look up geographic tongue. I get it with tabouleh too, especially one full of herbs etc.

Fresh pineapple contains bromelain enzyme. Canned pineapple has been heat-treated, which destroys the enzyme. Fresh pineapple, especially if its a bit unripe, makes my tongue hurt, sometimes makes my gums spontaneously bleed and gives me the runs. Confused Tinned is fine. Go figure.

hairymuffet · 16/06/2017 09:33

Salt and vinegar pringles do it to me.
Then my tongue peels over the next 2 days.

Backingvocals · 17/06/2017 12:10

Yes that's it Yvette. Tabouleh that's virtually all herbs will do it. I know it's got tomatoes in it but not normally enough in there to set me off. I can eat a tomato and mozzarella salad normally but not a tabouleh.

hairymuffet · 17/06/2017 12:24

Maybe it's parsley then ?

SecretFreebirther · 17/06/2017 23:32

Sounds like geographic tongue-my dd has this, she even struggles with toothpaste!

fabulousathome · 18/06/2017 09:57

Me too. Just avoid the foods that hurt you. Annoying but not impossible.

Promise44 · 27/07/2019 21:18

I get it too...its the lemon juice. Houmus bad for the same reason!

Footle · 27/07/2019 22:50
