My husband is due to have a vasectomy next month. Does anyone know how long it will take him to recover ie go back to work? Any experiences greatly appreciated.

hi toot!

my dh had this done a few years ago and immediately after it walked to a nearby cafe and called me for a lift (cos he missed the bus!)

he was a driver then and went back to work almost the next day

does seem to be quite straughtforward, of course sometimes in different men some might have more swelling than others, but from our and my friends experiences your dh shouldn't take too long to recover!

PS get a bag of frozen peas in for him to "hold"!!

Anyone have any advice on convincing my DH I am not suggesting he cut his balls off by having one (sorry to hijack but since you two seem to have managed it, please tell me how!!!!)

DH had his done last March. He was unlucky and they had to do a bit of fishing around to get everything they wanted! So as a result he was a bit more uncomfortable than usual. He was off work 10 days. To be fair, he could hardly stand for the first 5. BUT my BIL got it done and was back at work 3 days later....it all depends. BTW, it took nearly a year for his sample to clear enough to give us the all clear, nearly had to get it redone! Have to say the little bandage was very amusing!!

Tinker, sorry, DH suggested he got it done, he said I had had 1 3rd degree tear & 2 csections,so had been though enough. And I can't take the pill (breastfeeding) and cant take minipill cos of my rosacea, so he thought it was best all round if he took some responsibilty for our contraception! It helped that we def did not want more kids, and also from the information we had the mens op is more successful than the womans! Plus we hate condoms, and that's how we ended up with 3dc!! hth

Have had two terribe c-sections and now strongly advised to not have anymore children. It was my husband's idea to have the vasectomy because I really cannot get pregnant again. Also, we are sure that we do not want more children. He is very positive about it. He is having the operation on the Friday and then going back to work on the Tuesday. Hope this will be enough time for him to recover. Have heard it is months and months though until he can be given the 'all-clear' with regard to active semen.

DH had his done just over two weeks ago. He is still getting some discomfort from it now. He had the op on the Monday afternoon (which went well although they did have a b it of difficulty with one side but got there in the end!), worked from home on the Wednesday and went back into the office on the Thursday. Had a bit of swelling and discomfort last week which has almost gone and he is feeling a bit better now.
He didn't need the frozen peas but we did stock up on plenty of Ibuprogen and Paracetamol which were well used! I would suggest that he has plenty of comfortable, supportive undies and comfortable trousers. DH was living in baggy jogging bottoms for a while.
Well done to your DH for taking the responsibility too TootToot. I have friends whose husbands will not make the effort at all because of their pride and it's good to hear there are men out there willing to do their bit.

Thank you for all this advice. He is still insisting on only booking off one day (as holiday because he wants to keep it private). I think there will be trouble if things go wrong and he needs more time off. And this is the man who wears a plaster for weeks if he so much as breaks a fingernail!
