Itchy head shampoos are a bag of shit

I'm driven mad by sebhortic dermatitis. I must have forked out millions on bloody shampoos that don't work/ knacker your hair.
What else can I try?
Tgel, Moogoo don't work. Nor does Alphosyl, but that doesn't wreck your hair.
Nizarol and Oilatum have some effect, but God, the after results are awful. Wild kinky frizzy hair, that will not be calmed down
Body shop ginger shampoo made my hair go frizzy too.

Where do l go now? The cost of Nizarol and piss me off. Also, if you put conditioner on after one of these shampoos does it wash away the medical effects?

So how can l stop crazy itching or crazy frizxing. I've got betnovate scalp solution from the doctors but you aren't supposed to use it every day☹️

Loreal men's anti dandruff shampoo- black bottle with orange lid. About 3 quid for a huge bottle. It's ended 20 years of misery for me.

Eolian · 11/06/2017 09:18

Have you tried co-washing (just 'washing' your hair with a gentle sls-free and silicone-free conditioner and no shampoo)? I've only recently been having trouble with an itchy scalp (don't know the cause but it's fairly mild). Co-washing relieves the itching for me, but isn't that great for my dead straight, very fine hair. It's supposed to be great for curly or frizzy hair though.

AfunaMbatata · 11/06/2017 09:19

L'Oréal men's anti dandruff , it works miracles! Miracles I tells ya!

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 11/06/2017 09:20

Head and shoulders itchy scalp? That works for me.

Thingywhatsit · 11/06/2017 09:29

When my scalp gets bad I smother it in coconut oil and sleep in it and wash it out next morning. I have suffered for about 15 years now and out of all the stuff I have tried this has worked better than all the shampoos like nizoral etc. Also try and use a sls free shampoo. Currently without a decent shampoo as herbal esscences have changed their naked range and now my scalp has flared up with their replacement. Currently using a Waitrose own brand one that isn't too bad but it's not brilliant.

My hairdresser friend says to use olive oil rather than coconut oil as it is more moisturising so am gonna try that next time.

Might be worth a try???

knicknic · 11/06/2017 09:29

E45 shampoo is good

Almostthere15 · 11/06/2017 09:32

Aveda shampure has always worked for me. I agree with pp that oil can help, I use olive oil once a week rubbed onto my scalp overnight and wash out in the morning.

Your conditioner shouldn't gonna the scalp but instead on the ends so it shouldn't affect the scalp I wouldn't think?

TomaszCanSchafernakerMeAnytime · 11/06/2017 09:32

The white bottle Garnier has made a massive difference to my itchy and flaking scalp and it doesn't make my hair super frizzy like the specialist shampoos do.

TomaszCanSchafernakerMeAnytime · 11/06/2017 09:32

Ultimate Blends Oat Milk.

Dairymilkmuncher · 11/06/2017 09:33

The caffeine one worked for me once and then started to make my scalp worse that it was before, started the brown tgel one and it's working for now but interested in what works for others because the t gel one leaves my hair dry so tuggy.

By the way you can condition the ends of your hair but keep it away from your roots/scalp

ommmward · 11/06/2017 09:38

I gave up on shampoo or conditioner entirely. Wash my hair in water every couple of days, giving my scalp a good gentle scratch to get dead skin off. For the adjustment period of about 3 months, I massaged a tablespoon of bicarb of soda into my scalp when washing, and then conditioned with a squirt of lemon juice, and gradually phased that out. There's about six weeks when it gets pretty sticky and greasy (hence the bicarb) but after that you're done with the hair cosmetics for good. My skin reacts badly to pretty much any shampoo - they tended to burn my scalp.

Cakescakescakes · 11/06/2017 09:41

Is it the brown tgel you were using? The others are rubbish but the brown one is very effective for me. Using a good conditioner doesn't affect it at all. I spent years reliant on (over-)using betnovate in my teens so you have my sympathy :)

PlymouthMaid1 · 11/06/2017 09:45

I would try olive oil both on the scalp overnight and more in food. Also check your diet for vitamin B. I firmly believe that it is more about what you out in your body than on it.

HamletsSister · 11/06/2017 09:52

I use a Paul Mitchell tea tree hair and scalp treatment as a conditioner. Helps a lot. Use Oilatum intense first. Both are expensive but the conditioner made a huge difference.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 11/06/2017 10:02

It was the brown tgel, but it didn't work. Currently sat here scratching.

Which are the best cheap ones? I'll give the olive oil ago. Do you need to do it every week?

Seb derm and dandruff are caused by a fungus
What got rid of a my dandruff was a one dose fluconazole for something else (nipple thrush)
You also need to avoid the area being damp and wet

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 11/06/2017 10:10

I can't find the Garnier one. I usually get on with their stuff.

This one, it's on offer in Tesco at the moment

Philip Kingsley - itchy flaky scalp shampoo. Keeps my SD at bay! Amazing.

CaptainCatFace · 11/06/2017 11:14

Just to balance it out, that white garnier one is no good for me. Nioxin is good and not too expensive on eBay for how much you get.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/06/2017 11:15

No good for me either, really made me flare up!

Oh OP I am scratching here too. I'm 59 and had itchy scalp all my life. It's getting worse.
I've tried Nizoral, tar based shampoos, betnovate, you name it.
Things that help a bit. Vary the shampoos, never use the same one all the time.
I have some antiseptic liquid which has helped a bit.
I don't dye my hair but that did used to improve it and bizarrely in the eighties when I used to have a perm that worked really well. Grin

Applying oil does sound worth a try but how on earth do you do it?

PotOfYoghurt · 11/06/2017 14:27

Some things will work wonders for some people but will be useless for others.

Something tends to work well for me for a few months or a year then it stops working.

What I have found that works very well for the last few years is Superbalm, the small silver pot from Lush. I massage it in to dry hair in the worst patches, leave it for 15 minutes and then wash and condition as normal. It lifts all the flakes and scale off and soothes it all down. I really notice when I haven't used it in a week or so.
