What would cause an ankle to swell and be painful?

Woke up Tuesday morning to my ankle being swollen and painful. It feels like I may have gone over on it but I have no recollection of it. No idea what I have done or what I should do! By the end of the day it's really painful and at least twice the size of my other ankle.

RICE
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation
Rest it, elevate it so your foot is above heart level if possible.
Use an ice pack in it to 20 minutes every 2 hours if possible.
Wear a compression sock (you can get them from chemist)
Take anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen

Infected insect bite? I had one in my finger joint....

I'd go to the doctor. Infections can spread. I'm sure you don't want your foot chopped off!

Pretty sure it isn't an insect bite (no marks).

Have tried the RICE method in the evening as that's when it's most painful. By morning it's not so swollen but you can see it's definitely bigger than the other one but still hurts.

My finger joint didn't have a bite mark.

Do you have gout?

mymatemarmite · 09/06/2017 16:37

Don't think I have gout but will keep it in mind. Ankle has been a lot better today, still visibly swollen and a little sore but nowhere near as bad as it has been over the last couple of days.
