blood pressure 122/72 & bpm 54?

I had to take an elderly relative for a BP check today and as it was one of those self operation machines, I checked mine too. It was 122/72. Should I be concerned about this (it used to be quite low but I did have an undiagnosed endocrinology problem then). It seems to have crept up in the last 3 years. I'm 48 and presume I'm perimenopausal. I have a relatively healthy vegetarian diet, don't smoke or drink but am not very active due to a disability.

How can I lower these numbers or are they ok?

Sounds like a normal reading to me

SirVixofVixHall · 07/06/2017 13:56

That's a good healthy reading.

Perfect blood pressure! X

Really? Seems much higher than normal (my normal) but I suppose that would have been classed as low (around 87/58). Lots of high blood pressure problems in my family so I suppose now is the time to ensure it doesn't rise any further.

I could do with losing a few lbs. Anything else that could help?

Your BP is now normal. Used to be bizarre.
imho, there are better things to worry about.
If you think you are overweight & under-exercised, you can do something about those things anyway.
You could put it in your diary to do spot checks on your BP once every 6m so you know this isn't an accelerating trend.

Oh... and cut your salt intake. As much as you dare without getting obsessive about it.

OP There is a UK website Blood Pressure .co.uk or something like that.

Have a read.

Normal BP is 120/80.

Ideally they like it slightly lower now- so in the region of 110/70.

If the lower figure is below 60 that is considered too low and with health risks as well. You are in danger of keeling over with a figure as low as the one you said you had before. Did no one tell you that?

Also, when you checked your own and the top figure was 122, were you 'at rest'? Did you follow the instructions? These include not having a hot drink or doing any exercise before you take it.

Thank you for responding.
Yes, my BP before my weird endocrinology problem was treated was low but I never felt unwell and no gp or specialist ever commented on it. I am dealing with the few pounds I've gained. One of the issues my medication can cause is low blood sodium levels.

I'll have a read through that website, thank you. I hadn't planned on doing a BP check so had had a hot drink about half an hour before but hadn't exercised.

Your blood pressure and heart rate are within normal range.

Mine used to be 90/60 for years and years. Now it's 120/70 which I put down to age (46). Still in healthy range though, am a healthy weight and I do loads of exercise (but drink quite a lot!)
