Sorry, gross: how often should you poo?

Apologies in advance for WAY too much information.

I usually poo three times a day. I assumed this was normal. It seemed logical that three meals a day = three poos a day.

HOWEVER I have since heard that most people poo once a day or even once every two days?!

I have two questions:

  1. If you're pooing once every two days, HOW DOES TWO DAYS WORTH OF FOOD FIT IN YOUR STOMACH??!

  2. Do I have some kind of terrible digestive problem? I don't have any pain or incontinence or other symptoms, but I seem to be WAY out of average? I eat a vegetarian/mostly vegan diet, which I believe is quicker and easier to digest...is that the reason I poo so much? Am I just being a hypochondriac?

Can't wait to see your responses.

Once or twice a week, absolute tops. When I swallowed a crown it took 10 days to come out. Which was nice.

ThunderInMyHeart · 25/05/2017 22:09

Every morning, post-coffee

Orangebird69 · 25/05/2017 22:11

There's no pattern to my movements. Sometimes a couple of times a day, sometimes not for days...my body seems to get poo fear - I didn't poo at all for 10 days on holiday once. I wasn't holding it in or anything. Just disn't feel the need to go Confused. There's definitely places my body seems more relaxed about pooing at - home, DMs house, bffs house, all good. Other places, it just doesn't seem to want to happen. Odd.. Hmm

SnickersWasAHorse · 25/05/2017 22:13

Twice a day at least.
After breakfast and when I come home from work. Occasionally later before bed.

If you only go twice a week are they massive?

Lollyb86 · 25/05/2017 22:14

Usually just once a day

FuckingDingDong · 25/05/2017 22:17

Eating doesn't equate to pooing. Depending upon what you eat, your body would absorb most of what you eat. Poo is undigestable food and cells from the wall of your bowels.

Quite Smeaton. And started by a user-lots-of-numbers.

SleightOfHand · 25/05/2017 22:47

Orangebird69 this is me too, I call them shy poos.

If you only go twice a week are they massive? No, constipated pellets.

Teddy6767 · 25/05/2017 22:50

Once a day, occasionally twice. I'd only go multiple times a day if I'd eaten something that had upset me like lots of fresh chilli

goldleaftea · 25/05/2017 22:53

apparently...according to my cousin who is a dr, we should be going at least twice a day.

BorisTrumpsHair · 25/05/2017 22:56

One meal in one poo out is ideal and I'm jealous OP - be happy!!!

Not many people function this way though.

Xmasbaby11 · 25/05/2017 22:57

2 or 3 times a day.

It's varied depending on my diet. When I lived in China, once a day, same time every morning. I was healthier there.

fortunacookie · 25/05/2017 23:32

Twice a week always hard been like this since a kid, if I was going twice a day I'd think I was very poorly Shock

My diet is shit though n I don't drink enough either

Hereforthefun · 26/05/2017 00:54

I have lots of problems with my bowel, so once a week is normal for me but usually it's loose. The last time I had a 'normal' stool was probably 3 weeks ago.

TheDropBear · 26/05/2017 00:59

I read somewhere that anything from 3 times a week to 3 times a day is in the range of normal and within that it's just about knowing your own body and what is normal for you.
If you've always been like that and it hasn't changed recently I wouldn't worry.

Teabagtits · 26/05/2017 01:14

My oh goes at least 5 times a day. Does my head in as he's rarely less than 20mins a time... but it's just his way of doing things.

MissBax · 26/05/2017 15:41

Sounds very healthy OP! Those who say twice a week - 😱😱😱😱

louisejxxx · 26/05/2017 16:52

Teabagtits so he spends over an hour and a half in the loo per day?!

Delatron · 26/05/2017 21:48

I think after every meal is considered healthiest. Means digestion is good and nothing is sitting around. I go once in the morning so good but could be better. If I eat loads of fruit and vegetables then more often.

It may be normal for you but I still don't think twice a week is healthy...

BusterGonad · 27/05/2017 10:27

What ever is normal for you, is normal, any changes to your norm isn't normal.

Hulder · 27/05/2017 10:46

Normal varies a lot - anything from 3 times a day to 3 times a week. The important bit is knowing what is normal for you. Your poo also shouldn't involve straining too much to get it out and ideally should be a type 3 or 4 on the Bristol Stool Chart.

Helpful leaflet here:
www.cnwl.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/Healthy_Bowel-_Patient_Information_leaflet.pdf

Also your food is digested - your poo is mainly water, dead and living bacteria from inside your gut, mucus secreted by your gut and bile from your liver, plus undigested fibre and bits of food. So most of your poo is not made of what you have eaten but water and bacteria.

user1495388403 · 27/05/2017 13:47

I know it's not healthy, I have IBS and can't help it. I'd love once a day with normal regularly.

PollyPerky · 27/05/2017 17:11

2 or 3 times a day for me. Straight after breakfast then often again in an hour or so and sometimes after my next meal. I eat a lot of fruit and veg.

Sharl2017 · 29/05/2017 12:29

I have ibs and generally go 1 morning and 1 night. Sometimes there'll be an extra 1 or 2 in there too.
Sometimes I won't got for 3 days (this drives me mental!)
I like to be regular with twice a day.

Handbag101 · 30/05/2017 07:28

Once a day or sometimes twice.

I eat loads of fruit and veg which really helps. If I eat rubbish, my stomach really suffers which isn't good and can be really uncomfortable. Blush
