For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and more detailed information here

See Tortoise that's what I need to do, proper useful excercise instead of poncing about in an unflattering short skirt chasing a ball.

Sorry for the thread contamination...

FrannyandZooey · 12/03/2007 20:35

Hello everyone

Welcome Sarz - please do join in and feel free to brag lots about your fruit eating. Are you a nanny then? Have you also got children of your own? I was a nanny before I had ds (and I keep meaning to ask Overrun why this was a bit of a shock to her - I hope not because no-one would trust me with their children)

Filly how can you not like T Rex???? Can you not at least respect him for his hair? I can just about understand not liking them, but "loathing" them

Tortoise I wondered how you were doing. Your garden is making me feel tired.

I have been to the gym AGAIN. Still not doing the cardio properly but did all my weights and nice to see my arms look quite good when pumped up again (mostly because they are so skinny the muscle looks disproportionately large). I thought muscle was meant to atrophy really quickly - NQC or anyone know?

Overrun I was wondering if your dh could post and tell us how you are if you do have your op. I know we will be missing you and thinking about you anyway.

Oh I think I am just going to do a big cauliflower cheese and then roast the rest at the weekend. Probably. I have eaten plenty of minneolas today and some sprouting broccoli but also rather a vast amount of chocolate

Overrun any news????

OP posts:
Greensleeves · 13/03/2007 08:22

What's going on with Overrun Franny? Is it to do with her headaches?

FrannyandZooey · 13/03/2007 08:32

Greeny

"I have a vascular condition, and one of the symptoms of it are severe varicose veins. They are going to try and tie up some of the valves. They are not hopeful, which is another reason why the whole thing is getting me down. Still, I originally thought it was worth a go, so we will see how it pans out, once I actually have it"

I think Overrun has wondered if it is connected with her headaches but I don't know the answer

OP posts:
Greensleeves · 13/03/2007 08:37

Oh, poor Overrun , migraines are awful. I think the pain of a migraine headache is causes by constriction of the blood vessels in the head, so it could well be connected. I hope they get to the bottom of it and sort it out for her.

(btw am having my RAW oats/sunflower seeds/linseed/poppy seeds/raisins/honey/coconut/apple juice concoction, it's lovely)

FrannyandZooey · 13/03/2007 08:40

Have eaten RAW oats RAW apples RAW pears RAW soya milk RAW sunflower seeds RAW pumpkin seeds and RAW raisins myself

(what is with this raw thing O Green One?)

lol, I am not gone yet I have to ring the ward at midday to see if there is a bed. Then go in at 2pm if they have a vacancy, then the surgery will be tomorrow.
Thanks for all your concern. Greeny, I hadn't thought of a possible link between increase in migraine and my circulation problems. Its worth mentioning. I hadn't thought about it before, as my condition is something that I was born with, very rare, yah, lucky me But my problems are getting worse as I get older.
I am sort of hoping that it will be cancelled again, as dt1 is unwell. I imagine it would be selfish to let him visit me, but I can't bear the thought of being away from them for a few days, esp with him being unwell
Also I am still breastfeeding, and did discuss all this with the ward when I was going to go in before they were 2. I have sort of lost my nerve about it all now, and was just going to feed them when they visit, and miss out the feed before surgery tomorrow morning.
Sorry for hijack.
So far I have had 2 clementines and museli. If I have time, I might check in with MN later. Esp as I might be hanging around this afternoon, waiting to know whats happening.

FrannyandZooey · 13/03/2007 10:39

Thinking about you and sorry that you have to have this hanging around

I can understand cold feet but I am sure you can work out the breastfeeding thing somehow - will you need to be on any medication? My friend was sectioned for about a month and still managed to carry on breastfeeding her toddler during visits - it was such a comfort and return to normality for both of them

Oh Franny, don't be obtuse

Greensleeves · 13/03/2007 11:12

(re. oats, that is)

Sorry you've got to wait around Overrun, what a bugger . I hope you'll feel much better when it's done, and at least the worry and the inconvenience will be behind you then too. Is it worth asking the consultant who is handling your vascular problem whether the migraines could be linked? And you're not hijacking, we asked!!

FrannyandZooey · 13/03/2007 11:25

Shut it Rawsleeves or I will wee on you

OP posts:
Overrun · 13/03/2007 12:10

They don't know if there are any beds, so I have to wait around to see. Bugger

FrannyandZooey · 13/03/2007 13:50

Oh no Are you still hanging around?

OP posts:
Overrun · 13/03/2007 14:11

yep, still here

FrannyandZooey · 13/03/2007 14:34

still waiting to hear?

OP posts:
Overrun · 13/03/2007 16:06

HI Franny, I havve just been told that they don't have a bed for me, but that they want me to go in tomorrow at 8am, STARVED. No food or drink from midnight.
In a way this is better, as it means less time away from the children. But I can just imagine waiting around all day feeling really hungry and then the op being cancelled at 4 or something
Anyway, my mission should you choose to help me. Is to make a really yummy healthy 10/10 dinner tonight.
In my veg box (delivered today) are:
Valor potatoes
onions
carrots
sweet mama squash
swiss chard
cauliflower
leeks
mushrooms
cruly kale
white cabbage
cherry tomatoes
fennel

So any ideas? Bear in mind that if I do have the op, I wont be up to cooking for a while and dh will probably let all this rot So need to use as many vegetables as possible
TIA

Greensleeves · 13/03/2007 16:09

Hi Overrun, you do sound a bit stressed, I hop all goes well tomorrow. Hopefully they won't cancel it at the last minute.

Re. the veg, could you just chop it all up, toss it in some olive oil, lemon juice and a bit of thyme/basil, and then either do a massive stir fry or bung it all in a big oven dish and roast it? Nice with crusty bread or toasted pittas.

Or you could curry it (simply, just chop up, boil, add curry powder and whatever other spices you have, serve with rice)

I'm sure Franny will have much better ideas though

Overrun · 13/03/2007 17:11

thanks Greeny. I think I will probably roast as much of it as I can, as you suggest. I don't want to risk a curry before my big day
How are you? Are you going to have raw food tonight as well

FrannyandZooey · 13/03/2007 18:43

Are you being sarky Greeny? I never have any ideas except soup and stew, while you and Overrun devise delicious 6 course cordon bleu meals

Sorry to hear of your starvation Overrun, we will send you virtual snacks in the morning

and I expect you have cooked it now, but I would make, erm

a

stew

OP posts:
Overrun · 13/03/2007 19:45

lol Franny, in the end I went for a take away Nice for me to have a night off anyway.
I am genuinely worried about those veggies though. I really would have cancelled the box, but for the fact I really didn't think it would go ahead. I loathe waste

FrannyandZooey · 13/03/2007 21:07

Overrun can you give them to a neighbour perhaps?

If you stick them all in the fridge they may still be usable anyway?

OP posts:
Overrun · 13/03/2007 22:10

Might do that Franny. Anyway, I am just signing off now, been up eating chinese and watching Life on Mars. dh and i love that programme.
If all goes well, I shall post again in a few days time.

FrannyandZooey · 14/03/2007 07:27

Just in case you are still around Overrun, good luck from all of us and see if you can send messages via dh or telepathy or something...
