MRI Scans

Boco · 07/03/2007 11:34

My 2 year old dd had an MRI scan 2 weeks ago, after she developed headaches, and one of her pupils became larger than the other.

During the scan, the radiographer said he did see something 'suspicious' so took the decision to scan her whole spine aswell, as he felt she'd be sent back for further scanning anyway.

We were told that we'd be seen by a consultant in a different hospital within 10 - 14 days.

Today is day 14 and not heard anything. We have no idea who the consultant is as we only ever got the letter from the scanning dept of a diff hospital.

I called my gp today, and asked if he'd heard, and if not hearing is good news. He said he'd not heard, didn't know where the results were supposed to be sent, and that no news is not necessarily good news, due to the high incidence of lost notes / errors / misplaced results etc. thanks alot. He didn't offer to help - gave me the number of someones secretary to try, - i called them, and they're away til next week.

Not even sure exactly what i'm asking, just ranting mainly, but does anyone know how long these things usually take, and what i could do next? The not knowing is really stressful.

Hi Boco, really sorry you are going throu this, it is very worrying
DH had his brain scan at 5.30 on the monday and we got a phone call on the tuesday morning saying abnormalities and he needed to go into hospital instantly, he had more scans and on the thursday (his birthday) we were told he has MS & a brain tumour that was six weeks ago, we were told he would be rescanned in april and that was it. a vist to our GPs last week and he read out the hospital letter which said they think DH has a low grade Glioma (not cancerous, and slow growing}it would have been nice if the hospital had told us that.
i would chase up the results thou i know part of you probably doesn't want to know the results.

Boco · 07/03/2007 11:47

Part of me doesn't want to know, you're right, but also - i don't know how to chase it up - and neither does gp. the only lead he's given me there's noone there til next week.

You found out so quickly - i'm really hoping if Evie had something they'd have got in touch sooner.

ring the switch board at the hospital and explain what you want to know, they can generally put you in contact with the right person.

yes i would like to think that no news is good news for your DD, there must be someone at the hospital who can help.

onlyjoking9329 · 07/03/2007 11:53

Boco i have sent you an email via mumsnet.

robbosmum · 07/03/2007 12:38

ok, if in the UK, rimg the x-ray dept, and see if the radiologist has reported on the films, if so ask for the report to be faxed to the gp asap. The hold up may be the reporting time. The x-ray dept will know which cons you are under as they will also send the results to him/her

did you get anywhere with this Boco?

Boco · 08/03/2007 15:16

Called the MRI dept, and the secretaries of several paeds, and the gp again, and in the end today complained to Pals - they got a registrar to track down the scans, but they said that they can't really tell what the scan means for dd without knowing more - there's a 'dilation of the spine' but not sure what that means, but they're getting onto the consultant today, and should call us tomorrow. So, not sure what to think. I've come out in an itchy rash all over my body - apparently urticaria - and a temp, adn feeling a bit miserable today.

Thanks for emailing - but not received it yet - does it usually take this long to come through?
