DH is diabetic. On Sunday 12th all his foot was swollen and very red. We went to a&e and a small puncture wound was found under his foot,he was given antibiotics. At follow up appointment at foot clinic the following Wednesday it looked worse. They asked him to return the next day. Again it was worse, the nurse asked if he should be admitted but the doctor decided to change the antibiotics. This evening the dressing came off and I was shocked at how it looked. It's a lot worse. DH has another appointment tomorrow and I'm dreading what will happen.
Anyone been through this kind of thing?

You need to go into hospital now...and he needs to be seen by a vascular surgeon
Print off a cop of the NICE guidelines for managem of diabetic foot
www.nice.org.uk/Guidance/CG10
It is a very serious condition, sorry

cowgirlsareforever · 22/03/2017 21:31

A&E now. He needs IV antibiotics. Mark the line where the redness is, so that you can track how it's spreading.

ggirl · 22/03/2017 21:36

Yes , diabetic foot emergency ..needs to be seen asap

Fridaypodiatrist · 22/03/2017 21:39

Yes definitely A and E now , sounds like he needs Intravenous antibiotics and possibly a vascular assessment. Diabetics are especially vulnerable to spreading infection, please don't delay until his appointment tomorrow. Marking the edge of the inflamed area with a pen will also give a useful visual reference as to whether the infection is continuing to spread.

WicksEnd · 22/03/2017 21:39

Agree with the above. Do not waste any time and get straight to a&e.
It's all about the right combo of antibiotics. He needs specialist treatment ASAP.

Mermaidinthesea · 22/03/2017 21:40

Does hubby not have a podiatrist, I'm a diabetic specialist podiatrist and it sounds like he needs IV antibiotics as cowgirls says. if there is redness tracking up the foot and heat you cannot afford to waste any time. insist of going to hospital.

BagittoGo · 22/03/2017 21:42

Time is of the essence. Go to A and E. demand to be admitted. As others have said. My Dad ended up losing most of his leg because he didn't want to be a bother.

strongswans · 22/03/2017 21:44

I'm with pps. A and E now, its urgent!

gentlydoesit89 · 22/03/2017 21:49

Another here saying A & E.. my dad lost two toes under similar circumstances as he didn't tell anyone anything was wrong until it was too late.

shoeshinegirl · 22/03/2017 21:55

Good luck shoeshinegirl I've been where you are many, many times so I know exactly how you are feeling. I hope the hospital manage to get the infection under control.

ScarlettDarling · 22/03/2017 22:02

Wishing your dh all the best

MrsWildermac · 22/03/2017 22:05

Take pj's, a book, basic wash bag, radio or something to listen to. Also take your most demanding nature. This happened to my DH who is also diabetic. Got sent home three times before they realised how seriously ill he was. Hope you get help for him soon. Keep us updated.

MrsWildermac · 22/03/2017 22:06

Also, extra pillow and warm clothes.

RedBugMug · 22/03/2017 22:07

take pj's or tack suit bottoms.
snacks and drinks (for you)
phone charger
coins/cards for vending mashines and tv
something to read
a pillow

floatingfrog · 22/03/2017 22:07

Hope your dh is ok.

Haggisfish · 22/03/2017 22:08

Yy to charger and toothbrush and paste.

cowgirlsareforever · 22/03/2017 22:20

Don't do what I once did OP when, in a blind panic to collect pjs etc, I fell down the stairs and fractured my hip bone. That was not the best day I've ever had.
Seriously though take good care of yourselves. If they give him the correct antibiotics he'll be right as rain before you know it Smile

HiMyNameIsUnknown · 22/03/2017 22:37

Hope he is ok

shoeshinegirl · 22/03/2017 23:21

I will try and up date but signal isn't very good.
Thank you everyone Smile
