Dd with blood in urine but no infection?

Hi all. I'm really worried about dd. She is mid 20s and has been having infection /cystitis problems for a few years. When she goes to the doctors they test her and say there's no infection but last week she was weeing blood and the doctor said her wee was full of bugs. He sent it off but it came back with no infection. She has no pain in kidney area but has pain when weeing and wanting to go often. She has now been referred for some scans. Has anyone had anything similar?

Maybe she has interstitial cystitis. The scan and a cystoscopy should confirm what is going on

I had this at a similar age and it calmed down as I got older.

Thanks Riding. I've had a look at these symptoms and it does fit. It's beginning to affect her life in all sorts of ways. How long did it take you to grow out of it?

I had similar aged about 11-16. I had endless tests done on my urine and they all came back clear with the exception of some protein or blood in it. It got to the point where the doctor basically accused me of making it up to get out of school (despite the fact that I'd never missed a day ).

I ended up having a cystoscopy and several long courses of antibiotics to try and clear it up. Cystoscopy was normal and they didn't find a narrowing of my urethra or anything but after that I don't think I had one for nearly 6 years. My consultant suggested it was possibly just helpful to have my bladder filled and emptied with something sterile for a change. He also suggested that the reason for me getting them so much was because I don't go to the toilet that often- I just don't feel like I need to go unless I am totally desperate!

They had come back with a vengeance up until a year ago when I started taking D Mannose tablets to try and support my urinary tract. They are the only real change I've made (having struggled since primary school age I think I've tried just about every trick in the book!!) and I've not had a flare up for over a year now- massive change from having at least one a month! Definitely worth looking into as they really can't do any harm and if they help just a little then it can't be a bad thing! Look up Waterfall D Mannose (Sweet Cures) as they have a lot of fab information about it on there! Then buy it off eBay from Harvey Nutrition like I do haha!

As boring and as crap as it sounds your DD will have many patronising conversations with consultants suggesting that she does all the usual correct things- wipes front to back, pees before and after sex, washes with only water, empties her bladder frequently, drinks plenty of water, reduces sugar etc etc. This stuff is really boring and makes you feel about three but I do really find that trying to keep it all in mind at all times seems to just give you that edge on fighting it. I seem to recall a conversation with a MALE urologist telling me how to pee correctly

Endmoor thanks for replying. Sorry to hear you still have some problems here and there. What you've said about stupid questions has made me laugh! Doctor asked dd if she wipes from front to back and she told me she wanted to say "actually I get my poo out of the toilet and rub it in"! Gross but I know what she means!

I genuinely had this consultant act out how to go to the loo! I just sort of sat there looking all . Think they need reminding that we aren't idiots and we have been in control of peeing since we were very small!! They did start to take me more seriously though when I was a bit older and could sit there and say it was literally making me terrified of sex and of not drinking enough in case it happened again. They didn't really find anything but it at least reassured me there was nothing dreadful going on. Plus everything I had done (US, kidneys dyed and the cystoscopy) was all done as an outpatient so no hospital stays.

I'd definitely recommend the D Mannose and also proper Barley water. I find alcohol and sugar exacerbate it so mostly avoid them too now.

I'm having this problem now, will be three weeks on Monday I've been ill. How three samples with visible blood and puss in them can come back normal is beyond me.

It took about 3 years furry. I took d mannose too, and those sachets when it got really bad.

Hi OP I can sympathise with your DD as I've suffered for years with this. It does sound like it could be intertestital cystitis, she needs to see a Dr. They should refer her for a kidney and bladder scan and a cystoscopy.

From personal experience I can recommend hibiscus flower tea. Avoid cranberry juice or tablets if it is inflammation not infection.
What cured me was a really good barrier cream and a small dose of amitriptyline at night which stopped the nerve pain and broke the cycle.

Thanks all for these great ideas. Comps, yes her sample was full of all sorts floating around and no infection! Violet, she has been referred for kidney scan and cystoscopy. She's really getting very upset about it all as it's affecting her life now in all sorts of ways.

I just wanted to add that I take D Mannose all the time now. It obviously costs money (although not as much as two prescriptions a month every month!!) but the reassurance it gives me is invaluable to me!

Kidney stones?

Wearing thongs can transfer faecal matter up the urinary tract. Lots of docs do the patronising thing of talking about how to wipe when choice of pants can be the issue. However, you can have blood in urine and be asymptomatic of anything else (this happened to me at the same age). It was nothing.
