I know that it is normal to get some pains in your stomach after breastfeeding but DS is 4 months and they have suddenly become severe whilst im actually feeding and for about 30-60 mins after. It's just like bad cramps anyone know why or if its normal?

hummm, afterpains are certainly normal in the first few weeks after birth - feeding triggers the hormones that contract the uterus, or something like that ... I had bloody awful ones with ds (my first)! Haven't heard of them that late though...

Are you still nightfeeding? I think bf induces oxytocin?? production which is why you get the cramps when bfing after the birth as your uterus shrinks back to normal? Asked about the nightfeeding, as with DS1, he slept through very early, so my periods came back very early (I think due to long break in night from feeding). When bfing before my period was due I would get cramps.

DS2 - feeds all night long. No periods at 8m old.

I haven't had a period yet at all and most his feeds are at night as he sleeps with us and the cheeky sod latches himself on while i'm asleep and sucks all night!

i remember when i was breastfeeding my little one i used to get bad stomach pains but i asked my midwife about it and she said that brastfeeding makes the womb contract! thats why they say breastfeeding is a good way to get your tummy flat as well as it being best for baby!

Charleesunnysunsun · 02/03/2007 19:26

yeah i thought that, but i thought it would stop after a few weeks not get worse!

Might be worth seeing your GP then if it doesn't improve? Or ringing one of the bf lines to see if it's common - doubt it would be a GP area of expertise

Or post this over on the BF board? Or put a call out for Mears?

check with doc that you dont have an infection. I did the same as had pains for a year while feeding. then we to gyne doc for some special antibiotics
