This hideous coughing lurgy ....... who else has had it?

Anyone else had it and for how long? I'm now on day 23 and still not right.
Mine started just as a sore throat and tight chest. In bed for two days, eventually started feeling better but it was like one step forward, two back. I was sore from coughing and gasping for breath. Last Thursday finally started feeling vaguely human again but still get a spluttery coughing fit and feel worse in bed. I'm soooooo tired and can hardly climb the stairs. Prior to this I was running 5k twice a week, and doing 3 classes in gym as well as walking everywhere.

Who has had it-and recovered?how long did it take you?

dudsville · 25/02/2017 09:18

Uff. I was ill about 5 or 6 weeks ago. My coughing started at the tail end of the 1st week. It's subsided to no longer waking me up in the night and to only a couple of fits a day. Mine's a dry hacking annoying thing until, without going into detail, it finally becomes a little more productive and then subsides.

Just know it's horrible, should have had the flu jab!! Feel shattered this morning.only vacuumed yesterday, can't even do housework.

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 25/02/2017 10:10

I've had it on and off since Christmas- flared uup again last week, coughing till I threw up, feeling like I was suffocating; had to sleep sitting up propped against pillows. It's one of the worst bugs I've had.

TheLittleFoxes · 25/02/2017 10:51

I've been ill for nearly a week. It started as a sore throat (nice white spots on tonsils) then turned into a cold/cough/low grade fever. Last night was the first time I've had any decent sleep all week. Just went to get some breakfast and washed a few dishes and now I'm lying down again because I feel wiped out. I have a big week this week and I don't know where I'm going to find the energy to deal with it all.

Sympathies to those who have been suffering for weeks on end Flowers

Agh. Went down with something on Thursday morning. Had to go out all day so dosed myself up with everything going and ploughed on. Yesterday in bed, mainly asleep. Today, in bed, everything else is exhausting. Friends have had similar for weeks. Maybe a good hard cold snap would help: it's been so mild and wet.

Silver17 · 25/02/2017 11:13

Some people have the heavy cold symptoms that clear up quite quickly, the 'unlucky'ones have the awful 'flu' like virus for weeks. Oh dear.believe it takes ages to recover from the after effects. Docs say rest and keep hydrated.

BridgeRiverTower · 25/02/2017 11:19

OP it does sound like whooping cough. I have confirmed whooping cough, I'm in my 3rd week. I now have a secondary ear infection. I've had it pretty bad though and the whooping has been obvious. If your cough feels like choking rather than coughing then it might be Whooping cough.

I have a medically fragile child so have had to be on strict quarantine from them and that's one of the reasons that I was given the blood test to diagnose the Whooping cough.

It seems to be going around and not much being done about it.

Silver17 · 25/02/2017 12:19

Oh heck. Whooping cough!! Take care.

Silver17 · 26/02/2017 10:53

TheLittleFoxes. Let us know how you manage.

TealStar · 26/02/2017 17:09

Me! I'm in the throws of the fourth bout since coming down with it at new year. Catarrh, dizziness, muscle aches, sore throat, temperature, and oh the cough... it feels never-ending and I'm so BORED of it.
As I guess everyone around me is too! It is some comfort to know I'm not alone. Flowers for us all

Silver17 · 26/02/2017 17:35

Think we all just want to be well. PLEASE!!

Monkeyinshoes · 26/02/2017 18:23

I've got this. First week constant coughing, all day and all night. Night coughing stopped after four days but then coughing stuff up and during the day.

Now that's mostly stopped but I'm still coughing a bit and yesterday my chest started making all sorts of weird, wheezy noises on and off.

I have no temperature, feel perfectly fine otherwise, not even breathless. Hadn't bothered going to docs because I reckoned they'd say it's viral, might have to go and see if they hear the noises.

amysmummy12345 · 26/02/2017 19:10

For fuck sake, the coughing has come back with a vengeance today 😌 this is about week five of it now 😞

pieceofpurplesky · 26/02/2017 19:44

I am back to work tomorrow after half term - still coughing terribly and no idea how I am going to teach! And
Will no doubt pick up new germs too

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/02/2017 19:55

I'm in week 5 now as well I think. Another fresh bout of snot today for me and the baby. And back to school tomorrow for a fresh onslaught of microbe Soup.

Blacksheep78 · 28/02/2017 04:46

It's everywhere! So horrible! Go home and rest says the GP..... Just stay in bed....

Surely it must end some time.

TealStar · 28/02/2017 07:58

blacksheep that's the advice I was given... like it's so easy as a working mum to just lounge around for weeks on end like a frail Victorian lady. It's just not practical in this day and age!!

Silver17 · 28/02/2017 08:43

Has anyone lost weight too?

TheLittleFoxes · 28/02/2017 13:03

I don't know about losing weight but I am losing the will to live.

Spent most of the weekend in bed but felt much better yesterday and got loads done. Then had a terrible nights sleep and feel death warmed up today.

I could cry.

TealStar · 28/02/2017 13:24

LittleFoxes, same here. I had a great day last week where I cleaned the whole house, did several loads of washing, walked the dog, even managed to fit in some freelance work... and then next day that was it. Back in bed again ☹️

I felt better this morning so started to do stuff but as soon as I felt tired I forced myself back into bed. I think this is just the way it's going to have to be for the next few weeks.

I've heard a lot about 'mindfulness' the last year or so and am finding myself being very bloody mindful at the moment as I shuffle about like an old woman trying to focus on one thing at a time.

TheLittleFoxes · 28/02/2017 15:33

What I am struggling with is not lying in bed in the middle of the night worrying about the stuff to be done. I have one particular thing stressing me out but am going to have to grit my teeth and get on with it no matter how awful I feel. I swear the stress is prolonging this bloody illness!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/02/2017 18:49

Yep, I keep having days where I think I might be on the mend and manage to get things done, then suffer for it the next day! Still continuously snotty, never had such a runny cold (sorry, tmi!) but the cough had gone. I was trying to work out how long I 'd had it for and remembered I'd been to a christening on 22nd January and coughed so much I needed to leave the service- and remember saying to people I'd had it two weeks! So that makes over 6 weeks now. I think a few days proper rest would help me but it's just not logistically possible with 3dc . I don't think I'm ill enough really to take to my bed, but the day after day not quite feeling 100% and the exhaustion is really getting me down now. Weather doesn't help either does it?

Silver17 · 01/03/2017 08:59

Mornings seem to be worse for me. Go to bed feeling o.k.but then get up feeling shaky and really fed up. Oh dear!!

Silver17 · 01/03/2017 09:00

Been off sick two and half weeks, still not fit enough to go in.
