Am I only person who doesn't look after themselves? How to motivate myself to care?

So, yesterday is a fine example. I didn't eat breakfast. On the way back from the school run I bought a pack of choc bourbons and ate them with endless cups of tea inc sugar throughout the day - but nothing else. DH came home not feeling well so didn't want to eat, so I ate a bag of crisps and a couple of glasses of wine.

I never go to bed before 12.30, everyday I tell myself that I'll be in bed by 11.30, but can't do it, even though I'm shattered - I just feel it's precious child free time.

I don't do any exercise whatsoever. I'm a size 16, but in denial and still have size 14 clothes, which are bursting at the seems. Each year I get bigger and bigger.

I wouldn't let my children eat like I do, they have a great diet, but I just can't be bothered with myself. Now I'm starting to look older and feel older (38) and worry all the time about my health. Even though I spend so much time beating myself up about my bad eating habits and lack of exercise do I do anything about it? No - nothing, so how do I motivate myself?

Well done GOW, you sound very perky & should be very pleased with yourself! (big pat on the back!)

Judy1234 · 28/02/2007 09:43

That sounds very good.

I think most g"etting off sugar programmes", unlike going cold turkey for drugs and alcohol, would think weaning back slowly is best. A 7 steps to removing sugar type programme is at www.radiantrecovery.com which I have looked at before, but a very US web site. I have always felt worse the more sugar I've eaten. Definitely addictive for me. Even eaten all the toddlers' easter eggs one year before they knew they had them just because they were in the house, just like an alcoholic will go through every cupboard to find that last hidden bottle of whisky.

Honey is for your immune system, especially with porridge!

ScottishThistle · 01/03/2007 09:56

Xenia, I totally agree...If there's chocolate/sweets in the house I'll them!

How's your day going GOW?

ScottishThistle · 01/03/2007 09:56

Sorry I missed 'eat' in that sentence! (rolls eyes)

Often I don't eat breakfast because breakfast food is shit. But I bought a blender and now I make sure I have a banana smoothie for breakfast. Quick and easy to make, healthy and filling.

For every glass of wine you have, have a glass of water too.

Peanuts are a much better food to snack on than chocolate or crisps. Start buying monkey nuts or other plain nuts that you can tuck into.

If you get the bus, walk to the next bus stop along. Or if you go somewhere by car, park a little way off so you can walk the rest.

I like bacon and eggs mmmmm That's my breakfast foods.

Forgive me for butting in, I've got another thread going about my son's adenoid problems so having a look at other threads..wanted to recommend a drink..Innocent Detox..absolutely packed full of anti-oxidants..one glass seems to = 5 fruit and veg portions..I've been knocking back a carton every 2 days, keeping colds at bay and feeling really much healthier. The fruit sugars keep the sugar pangs at bay as well. Also I think we all feel a bit like this round this time of year..it always gets better as it gets lighter and the trees get green again. Sun shines more and its easier to get out for walks. Dark days and dark feelings seem to lift as we go into Spring..hope they do for you.

Glassofwine · 01/03/2007 14:37

I did go through a phase of making smoothies in the morning, as you say quick and healthy, but got out of the mode.

You've reminded me, so will start again.

What's that berry that's very expensive and rare and like bluberries (one of my favourite foods since when we children picked it on the moorland)?
It's best to eat the skin etc of fruit though than just the juice.

stleger · 02/03/2007 15:18

How's it going?

janeite · 02/03/2007 19:51

Xenia, is it a goji berry or something like that?

Now, can anybody answer my porridge question please, or shall I get my coat?!!!!!!!!!

nooka · 02/03/2007 20:10

Someone did already (if you can find it!). Basically the answer is yes! Cold porridge with fruit (esp rasberries I find) and yogurt is good too. Or you can make a nice uncooked porrige with fruit juice (apple is best) yogurt and fruit ("compote" type is best). I like to have muesli with ygurt for breakfast - it's the oats/whole grain that keeps you going, so it doesn't have to be porrige. Generally the more you have to chew it the longer it will keep you feeling full.

Oops, thanks hon! And sorry maomao, I missed it!
