Am I only person who doesn't look after themselves? How to motivate myself to care?

So, yesterday is a fine example. I didn't eat breakfast. On the way back from the school run I bought a pack of choc bourbons and ate them with endless cups of tea inc sugar throughout the day - but nothing else. DH came home not feeling well so didn't want to eat, so I ate a bag of crisps and a couple of glasses of wine.

I never go to bed before 12.30, everyday I tell myself that I'll be in bed by 11.30, but can't do it, even though I'm shattered - I just feel it's precious child free time.

I don't do any exercise whatsoever. I'm a size 16, but in denial and still have size 14 clothes, which are bursting at the seems. Each year I get bigger and bigger.

I wouldn't let my children eat like I do, they have a great diet, but I just can't be bothered with myself. Now I'm starting to look older and feel older (38) and worry all the time about my health. Even though I spend so much time beating myself up about my bad eating habits and lack of exercise do I do anything about it? No - nothing, so how do I motivate myself?

eating with the family is easier if you have 'buffet style'

(dont laugh)

i put most things in dishes on the table and let everyone help them selves

they seem to eat more and talk more

"pass the tatties" etc

Glassofwine, this is a big issue for me too. Sign up for www's 10 years younger boot camp on here on top of all the good advice you've had so far...it really does work.

nailpolish · 27/02/2007 09:41

MOH LOL!

MascaraOHara · 27/02/2007 09:41

I don't eat with my child (only at weekends) but I'm at work through her mealtimes.

Cook in the evening for you and your DH.. I do (although we eat veeeeery late)

Glassofwine · 27/02/2007 09:42

We do 'buffet style' at the weekend too Nailpolish- it does work well and dd's eat more veg too.

Ok, so I've said spilled the beans now - I wouldn't tell anyone in rl how bad I am, but am going to start looking after myself from today.

Starting with water - have kidney stones so I'm supposed to drink lots and never do, you'd never believe that I am an intelligent woman.

your children will pick up on it - stop!!!!

I know what you mean about the child free time though. BUT for a week why not try NO alcohol in the week and in bed by 11pm.

If I carried on like that (the eating) I would have a seriuos depressive crash so I am careful to eat little and often (maybe too often ).

nailpolish · 27/02/2007 09:45

GLASS can you go to the shops and get some nice luverly body lotion etc?

and use it EVERY day

are you bothered about losing weight? or just not gain any more

i was going to say buy some new clothes but dont do that if you are going to go down a size

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 27/02/2007 09:45

Glass of wine - just change a couple of things at a time. Otherwise you get all overwhelmed and give up.

More water is easy. Get a sports bottle and keep it with you.

Have breakfast - if you can't do it before the school run. Have some as soon as you get back.

There you go - you've started already!

sniff · 27/02/2007 09:45

nailpolish · 27/02/2007 09:47

sniff did you draw breath during that sentence?

Glassofwine · 27/02/2007 09:48

Oh Enid - you are so wise, I have been suffering from depression on and off this year. Feeling fine right now, but I know that my 'lifestyle' doesn't help.

Right, am off to get on with the studying now, but now have a jug of water next to me and will walk to school later. No crap from Supermarket, In bed early tonight (dh out) with a good book. Bet I feel better tomorrow.

thank you ladies

no I am rubbish at grammer whilst writing

Enid · 27/02/2007 09:48

I have what I fondly think of as a Power Breakfast - I have it at home when all kids gone - slice of wholemeal toast with no sugar peanut butter and a mashed banana, cup of lovely milky coffee, big glass of water.

I have hot water and lemon while the kids are breakfasting and I am running about.

Enid · 27/02/2007 09:50

If I don't drink [boo!] and eat sensibly - ie not too much sugar and little and often with plenty of veg, I rarely get depressed. When I am exercising too I feel like super woman !

elclose · 27/02/2007 10:24

just do it in stages but most important is
Breakfast nobody should ever leave the house without it.
Give yourself a pep talk not in your head say it out loud to yourself it doesnt matter if you feel daft
Also you obviously love your children very much so look after yourself as they look to you for guidance and support.

stleger · 27/02/2007 10:46

Porridge for breakfast has caused me to lose half a stone with no other dieting involved. It makes you feel virtuous too.

hoolagirl · 27/02/2007 11:02

Im not much better, if any!
On 4th coffee and had handful of mini chedders for breakfast!
Think will hang around this thread for inspiration.

nailpolish · 27/02/2007 11:04

TOTALLY agree about porridge

ratclare · 27/02/2007 11:26

glass of wine , its february for goodness sake ,dont try and get motivated until march ,its statistically impossible ! When it gets to march then pick one thing youd like to change ie exercise more or lose weight or even just start eating breakfast and concentrate on that one thing for a month , after a month add on something else and see how you go .
