Is it normal for my 10 month old to have so many runny nappies? FRANK DISCUSSION OF POO CONTAINED WITHIN, honestly I wouldn't read unless I had a small baby

She has always had runny poos, but she did have a tummy upset a couple of weeks ago when they were extremely watery. Since last Tuesday she has had fairly normal poos, but yesterday and today they are again HUGE and liquid. She seems fine in herself.

did you cut out dairy after the tummy bug? just that after nasty tummy things they can get dairy sensitive for a bit

Enid · 26/02/2007 11:33

can they? what about formula though?

yes, paed told us (when dd had gastro as a baby, then despaired that GPs didn't hand out this advice) - will look for medical note on it - hang on

if she sems well in herself i would leave it
bowels take a while to regenerate after a bug

Enid · 26/02/2007 11:39

i know if i take her to my gp he will say wait and observe

she is eating and very cheerful

dd had very runny poo on and off for a long time (embarrassingly long before i did anything as i was so busy with having ds i didn't pay enough attention ) after she hit a year she also stopped gaining weight and it turns out she's wheat intolerant... since cutting out wheat she's a changed shild with normal nappies and is gaining weight for the first time since she was 11 months old.

definitely second the suggestion to cut out cows milk to let her tummy ease up a bit... switch to goats milk as it's very good for healing stuff like this.

Enid · 26/02/2007 11:39

foxy find that dairy stuff

(did the filetti work btw?)

they can develop a temporary form of lactose intolerance after a nasty bout of gastro - I can't find anything online that isn't incredibly long winded but that's the gist of it

probably worth a visit to the doc anyway but I would cut out dairy and see what happens (can you get your hands on lactose free formula from the chemist in the meantime, just to see if it makes a difference?)

btw enid, meant to thank you for the Filetti recommendation - ds's skin is looking much better

My dd had a nasty tummy bug three weeks ago and her napppies were very runny for nearly all that time, because the delicate balance in the intestines has been upset. I have to be very careful with her diet as her body is still very sensitive, but she should get back to normal. my doctor prescibed enterol for her.

belgo · 26/02/2007 11:43

Forgot to say, think you should visit the doctors.

foxinsocks · 26/02/2007 11:51

x-posted with you enid

here's a bit on the BBC, says about the lactose intolerant bit at the bottom of the article gastro (if you google, temporary lactose intolerance, there's lots on it).

Enid · 26/02/2007 11:56

she has gone off water

will try warm diluted apple juice in a bottle

ok will keep giving normal milk, try the watery juice, and avoid dairy in her food for a bit

if no better by thurs will ring docs

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 26/02/2007 11:58

what is normal milk? do you mean normal formula?

if her poo is really bad, I'd cut it out - certainly for 24 hours

Enid · 26/02/2007 11:58

yes I mean formula

really? cut out her milk?

god she will be distraught

I thought weak apple juice was recommended for diarrhea?

if you did it for 24 hours and just gave her dioralyte and plain (non dairy) food, her tum would probably get a better chance to recover

Enid · 26/02/2007 12:03

dioralyte

plesae dont make me go out and buy more stuff

arragghghg
