Is it normal for my 10 month old to have so many runny nappies? FRANK DISCUSSION OF POO CONTAINED WITHIN, honestly I wouldn't read unless I had a small baby

She has always had runny poos, but she did have a tummy upset a couple of weeks ago when they were extremely watery. Since last Tuesday she has had fairly normal poos, but yesterday and today they are again HUGE and liquid. She seems fine in herself.

what about water with a bit of sugar in?

oh you don't need the dioralyte - plain water is fine (esp if she is eating non dairy food too like plain toast or banana)

Enid · 26/02/2007 12:05

"let her cry"

I dont do that

(therefore have three utterly spoilt kids)

you can nip out and get some lactose free formula if you like - she may baulk at the taste though

Have had the temporary lactose problem with DS, was solved by substituting with infasoy formula and using soy yoghurts etc for about 2 weeks. But he never got to the normal poo stage after his bug, it just went from 'normal' diahorrea if there is such a thing, to a vile smelling greenish stuff. Waaaay TMI I know but that's how it was. Changed back within 48 hours of no dairy, but was advised to leave it for 2 weeks to let the inflammation in his gut subside.

Mumpbump · 26/02/2007 12:43

When ds had the gastro bug recently, the doctor told me to make his formula up half-strength. The main thing is to cut down the fat content in their diet as the diarrhoea strips away the coating of their intestine that enables them to process fat. You could try half-strength formula first and, if still no improvement, then cut it out altogether...

Enid · 26/02/2007 13:48

ok she choked on the banana and threw it all up

poo slightly more pasty than runny now

will give half strength formula

If it's pasty rather than watery, chances are she is already on the road to recovery so that's good!

BigCookLittleCook · 26/02/2007 14:10

Had fun reading this, cod makes me laugh. Anyway, my DS had runny poos for over a month after a day of explosive tummy upset. I called HV a couple of times, she said it should "self eliminate" but to keep an eye on it and if it went on to take a sample in. So did the sample (not fun) and all was normal. Poo is slowly getting back to solid about six weeks later and like your DD, DS has always been perfectly happy and eating well despite dodgy nappies. I never did cut out formula as thought the same as you, that he would scream all night!

I would do the sample as it gives you peace of mind. Then, as long as it is normal, you can carry on giving formula and let her poo it out of her system .

Am sure I am giving very poor medical advice but it worked for us!

foxinsocks · 27/02/2007 11:49

how's dd enid? you can give her soy formula instead if you have it (like bamzooki did)

Enid · 27/02/2007 11:52

well her nappy was pasty again this am

so I sent her to nursery and so far they have not rung me to say 'come and collect your foul child' like they did last week

I gave her watered down formula (cop out I know) last night

she was sooooooooooo hungry this am was very funny watching her cram wheats into her mouth whilst goign 'mmmmmmmmmm'

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 27/02/2007 11:54

lol - poor little thing

I hope her tum recovers soon - if you have the soy formula, it might be worth trying because at least it will fill her up

she obviously has a sensitive little digestive system!

Enid · 27/02/2007 12:13

yes maybe will try

I thought soy 'bad' for some reason though?
