If you are vitamin D deficient, what have you been prescribed?

I've recently found out that my vitamin D levels are so low that it's not possible to get a reading on them (apparently below 30 doesn't register?) However, when I've collected my prescription they seem a much lower dosage on prescription than what I bought last week in Sainsbury's, and on googling it seems people are taking doses of around 5000iu for similar deficiencies. Do I need to double up? (Picture shows prescription on left and over the counter on the right).

I'm also hoping that you're going to tell me that getting your vit D levels back up transformed your life, helped you drop 2 stone and stopped you feeling 90 years old? Smile

If you are vitamin D deficient, what have you been prescribed?

hi mumma ,
yes , that should be excellent. When you get your test results, that is when you will be able to establish your long term requirement. Whether it be 2000 , 3000 or 4000 IU . When or IF you change your dose , then get another test about 3 months later , to find out how you have responded. Once you know your response , to that particular supplementation , then just test maybe once a year, just to check that everything is on track. ( At end of winter or early spring.)

Good luck , let us know how you get on ..!

Thanks so much BTBH for the link. I’ll check out the website and all the info. Having had cancer once I’m willing to every thing I can to avoid it again. Having vitamin D levels checked next week so hopefully they are good or I’ll up my supplementation further. I currently use the Better You vitamin D spray.

I’m interested to read about Omega 3s too on the website you linked

@Delatron ah that's the one I bought today and I also got calcium and magnesium supps too, let me know how your levels amend!

Delatron · 14/11/2019 21:13

Ah fab @Mumma1984 I think the spray format is great. I used their iron one too.
Will report back in with iron levels in a few weeks!

Vitamin D levels! Not iron.

Hi Bettertobehealthy.
Sorry to bother you again but I had a couple of questions I have recently thought of.

  1. I looked on that NHS link you gave for doing vitamin d testing and I see they don’t test serum calcium. Is this something I am meant to be testing for regularly while on vitamin d supplementation? The serum calcium level? And if I am meant to be checking for the serum calcium, how often, and is there anywhere privately I can I get this tested? The last check at the docs while I was supplementing with vitamin d, for serum calcium was fine.

  2. I have read online that some people say we should take co-factors. They say it’s dangerous to not take them while supplementing on vitamin d as could get a build up on calcium in the wrong places. Is this true?? Is it necessary to take co-factors? Some say need to take them with higher doses and some say even with lower doses like 1000IU or even 2000IU the co factors are needed. It’s all a bit confusing. Is it ok just to take vitamin d without co-factors? Where do they get this info from as I haven’t read any literature on it?

Would be good to hear your opinion. Thank you.

Hi Bettertobehealthy.
I just thought of another question which I don’t know if you have any knowledge about, but I thought I would ask anyway....do you know if there is a link between vitamin d deficiency and the perimenopause? I don’t know if I am in perimenopause but I was just wondering if this brings about a deficiency in vitamin d for women who are in perimenopause? Thank you for any feedback.
