Where to arrange a circumcision

dawnharvey68 · 25/02/2007 21:49

If we have a boy, we plan on having him circumcised. But it's proving exceedingly difficult finding someone to do it where we live.
My husband was born in the USA where pretty much all boys are circumcised routinely before they leave the hospital and it seems strange here that it is so difficult to arrange such a simple thing.
I'd be interested to hear if others found it as difficult.
It seems quite a common problem in the UK, finding someone who will perform a newborn circumcision, so I a support group for those trying to sort it out:
health.groups.yahoo.com/group/babycircuk/
All I have been able to find so far is that if you are in the south of England/London area, you are particularly well served:
Luton: www.circumcision-agency.com/
London: www.circumcisions.co.uk/
London: www.theportlandhospital.com/
London: www.samedaydoctor.co.uk/links.aspx
Reading: www.circumcision-uk.com/
UK Mohels: www.lubavitchuk.com/services/religious/mohellist.shtml
www.mohel-circumcision.co.uk/
www.londoncircumcision.co.uk/
plus probably others that would appear on a search.
Does anyone know of anyone else that will perform them?

i wonder if when you see the babies tiny little face looking at you ,you will be able to go through with it.in a word my opinion is barbaric.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/02/2007 13:22

Can anyone else see the irony in vegetarianism being compared to circumcision here?

Expat, you are brilliant sometimes

Eleusis · 26/02/2007 13:22

Mummylin,

I wonder if you would take kindly to the same sort of harsh judgements being placed on the parental decisions you make with which other people might not approve?

Posts like that are really not constructive.

Tortington · 26/02/2007 13:24

some peoples religeos beliefs are very important to them. in that light and for medical reasons i can understand the decision making processes.

mummylin2495 · 26/02/2007 13:28

this is apublic forum and the op is asking for other peoples opinions ,if she dosent like it why ask,or is this forum only for people who agree with her ? you have your opinion i and many others have ours.if you dont like it tough !

Judy1234 · 26/02/2007 13:28

Some religious beliefs say you deny your children blood so they die. Just because it's religion doesn't mean we let people get on with it. Some cults approve of child sex etc.

I don't think circumcism of boys is particularly harmful but I'm not sure as a man I would be happy my parents decide to chop skin off my penis without my consent particularly as many children now reject their parents' religion and you can hardly put it back or may be you can?

pooka · 26/02/2007 13:30

But Eleusis I'm trying hard to think of other things you can actually do to your baby's body that could also be described as "barbaric".
The best I can come up with are childhood vaccinations. And if someone called me barbaric for putting ds/dd through them,I'd a) be able to say that there are incontravertible health benefits of vaccinations, b) they don't leave long lasting reminders (nothing like a missing foreskin).

I just cannot understand why a mother would let their ds have this procedure for grounds other than religious reasons.

I look at my ds's willy a lot (he's in nappies so plenty of time in that area) and it's perfect. If there is a future pressing medical need to have a circumcision, then we will deal with that at the time. But the idea of having his foreskin sliced off now, or when he was days old, is beyond my understanding.

pooka · 26/02/2007 13:32

Xenia - I think I recall reading about a movement of men in the US who are pXXXXd off with their circumcisions. Think there has been limited success by some of the members in stretching the foreskin a bit. Not sure whether reconstructive surgery exists - may google and see what I can come up with!

clarinsgirl · 26/02/2007 13:33

Saucymoo - I'm confused by your earlier post 'through proof not blind faith'. I was just wondering what proof caused you to have your son circumcised? Also I thought the point of faith was that there was no proof - if there is proof then its not faith, its knowledge.

I don't want a fight I'm just genuinely interested in your motives.

Judy1234 · 26/02/2007 13:36

It's not an open and shut case but I know most UK doctors and probably most US ones now think the risks do not justify having it done and it is not medically indicated (except in rare cases). That is a change from how things were. I doubt though we can yet say it's child abuse.

I am much much more concernd about female genital mutilation. We have some girls in local schools here who go to the toilet for 30 minutes because it takes them that long to urinate (their families had it done abroad or sent them abroad for the operation).

Eleusis · 26/02/2007 13:37

Dawnharvey68 stated sever times I'll let you search yourself that she started this thread as resource for peopl who have chosen to circumcise, and not because she wanted to be criticised for her decision.

I personally don't really feel strongly about circumcision I can see both sides but I do think that dawnharvey is entitled to to type here and I don't like seeing new posters abused.

Now, if you had just said you disagree and you think it's wrong, okay. But, your post goes a bit further. "...when you see the baby's tiny little face looking at you..." Oh come on, there a good chance that baby will be so comfortable that he will be sleeping.

mummylin2495 · 26/02/2007 13:41

sleeping when someone is cutting him !and i did actually state that it my opinion and im entitled to that.yes the poster is entitled to write what she wants but then so am i and anyone else who has thoughts on this subject.

Eleusis · 26/02/2007 13:43

If you want to argue that the boy will have pain when the anaesthesia wears off, I can give you that. But they don't feel a thing during the procedure. Just like I couldn't feel my root canal while I was in the dentists chair.

SaucyMoo · 26/02/2007 13:44

well this forum has opened my eyes-which is always a good thing-did not realise what people thought about it!

Its like a lot of things you enforce upon your child when they are too young to think for themselves-not allowing them to watch tv, junk food, etc etc....

tbh if it wasnt required by religion i would probably think twice-reason being it is a hassle-you have to call a docter then clean his little dinkle with antiseptic 5 times a day for 10 days and put vaseline on it-long! and it costs like 200 pounds! (pound sign not working on my keyboard) and ofcourse the less needles going into your baby the better for you.

Frances-there is a difference between following religious teaching which is authentic and changing it and doing it in the name of religion-like the whole driving thing is not really from religion eventhough it is enforced in the name of it. Like a whole lot of things which are done in the name of religion but arent actually religious-not mentioning any cos that really is for another thread. Educate yourself first-get the facts right before making random comments please.

Mummylin-it is your opinion, i respect that. i saw his little face and we went through with it..does that make me a bad mother...lol, i dont think so. If so then most mothers i know are bad mothers!

mummylin2495 · 26/02/2007 13:47

"the baby will have pain when anethesia wears off " that is reason enough for me.

saucymoo no it dosent make you a bad mother ,just different from me and my opinions

Greensleeves · 26/02/2007 13:48

God Xenia that's heartbreaking

clarinsgirl · 26/02/2007 13:48

Saucymoo - I asked a question (see below). Please forgive my ignorance but why does your religion require circumcision?

SaucyMoo · 26/02/2007 13:50

clarinsgirl-what i meant was, i follow the faith because i have proof it is the true religion-plenty of literature available detailing proof of the quran etc etc (im NOT trying to convert anyone just answering a question so dont all start having a go at me please about this in particular!) So once you believe in that it makes it quite easy to follow the whole religion-do you see what i mean? if you believe in the authenticity of the book then you will try and follow everything in it? hope that makes sense-btw im not a religious fanatic, just to trying to explain why i live my life the way i do...(hides behind the sofa)

SaucyMoo · 26/02/2007 13:51

clarinsgirl no probs-if you read further down i posted 5 reasons why it does....

SaucyMoo · 26/02/2007 13:52

Xenia-that is AWFUL and horrible and unjust. That sort of mutilation is actually forbidden in islam but sadly is still carried out. Apparently it dates back to pre-islamic times.

clarinsgirl · 26/02/2007 13:53

Thanks Saucymoo - so is the Quaran direct with regards to circumcision or is this an interpretation?

quietmouse · 26/02/2007 13:53

SaucyMoo - you follow your faith and make decisions for your own conduct based on that. But what about your newborn? What gives you the right to make that decision for him? it's not something that can be reversed or that he can change his mind about at a later date, is it?

clarinsgirl · 26/02/2007 13:57

Saucymoo- but the reasons you state are medical (and not that robust), they're not religious.

SaucyMoo · 26/02/2007 13:58

Quietmouse, why do you keep banging on about this...i also gave him a BCG and its left a horrible scar...what if he grows up and wants to be a bodybuilder or model and his scar makes him feel ugly-sounds stupid doesnt it......its the same thing...

quietmouse · 26/02/2007 14:00

it's the same thing at all. It's laughable to compare the two.
