I'm really worried about my blood pressure.

I popped into my Drs surgery today to pick up a prescription for my daughter.
I thought I'd check my blood pressure with there machine you can use, as I checked it a couple of months ago, anyway, it was 158/85.
I am now really worried.

Have you got a home BP monitor?

A one-off reading is not representative.

DelphiniumBlue · 12/12/2016 19:54

Check it again and make an appointment to see the doctor. Blood pressure is often easily controlled with the right drugs and life style changes.

No I haven't got a home moniter.
I checked it again, as it was a bit high last time I checked.
I put the slip that comes out of the machine into an envelope that they provide. Do you think the Dr will get back to me?

Make an appointment for a check up. They may offer 24 hour monitoring to check for underlying problems.

I'm suffering the same, went to the doctors as the right side of my head and neck were literally banging. I was in so much pain, he took my blood pressure and said that was why. Initially I was 160/94, I've been on tablets for it for 3 days and have come off the contraceptive pill, my head is almost better and I'm now 140/90 and I'm upping my dose to 2 a day rather than 1. It's been a complete shock, I'm actually feeling pretty low about it. I feel I'm far to young for this crap (38) and I'm not overweight, I'm not skinny but on the high end of normal BMI.

Hi. I've been on blood pressure meds for a number of years. Like you I was really worried about it when I was first diagnosed and of course that can make the numbers go up higher. When I get my blood pressure taken by a professional they always take it at least twice and just in those few minutes it can go down significantly. Also factors like sitting with your legs cross and needing a wee can effect readings apparently.

Unfortunately, high blood pressure usually doesn't have any symptoms and can be high because of genetic factors as well as being unfit etc and people of any age can have it. Fortunately, it's very easily treated as pp have said with the right combination of pills if necessary. Not having your blood pressure controlled is extremely serious and not an option. But try not to worry, your result could be a one off. I'd get it checked by a health care professional to check you are doing it correctly for starters.

I'm dreading my blood test results for cholesterol tomorrow! Sad

scaryteacher · 14/12/2016 19:17

My BP went from 120/80 when seeing the cardiologist on a Thursday, and not much higher when doing the increased resistance test on the exercise bike thing, to 204/90 the following Monday when doing a 24 hour monitoring. The damned cuff kept slipping down and then the machine stopped working. I still haven't been contacted about my results......

bluebellforest · 14/12/2016 20:16

Thanks everyone. I have an appointment to see my Dr tomorrow.
I might also ask if I can get my cholesterol checked.
