I had a fit last night

Just need some hand-holding and impressions.

My DP was woken up last night by me "having a fit" - me eyes were open and vacant, I was completely unresponsive and shaking violently.

I hope this isn't epilepsy etc. Thankfully I already have a GP appointment booked for this afternoon.

Really, really, scared...

I know someone who had fits because of seroxat /paroxetine/Paxil.

RubySparks · 28/11/2016 20:00

Also heard that e-cigarettes and vaping can sometimes cause seizures.

mummyharvey · 29/11/2016 08:19

As an epileptic myself I'd start making notes of how you're feeling afterwards. Get your OH to time your seizures, what you were doing before hand & where you were. Always always call an ambulance if they're longer than 4mins & make sure someone's with you when you recover for a few days.

My seizures are noticeable 7 days before I have one. There's little signs that I don't notice but other people do. Then it takes me a further 7 days to recover properly after having one. The biggest thing to get over is the fear & the disappointment each & every time. You'll get help & you'll be on the mend. Don't let it take over your life. Good luck & I wish you all the best with this getting sorted for good Flowers

Hi there OP.

I had my first fit a week ago two, was at work and they rang 999. All I remember is having a sip of Diet Coke at my desk, it feeling like it wasn't going down properly and next thing waking up on the floor.

Witnesses describe a classic tonic-clonic seizure and I was taken to A&E.

Basic work up (including non-contrast CT) revealed nothing, so I was referred to neuro urgently and told not to drive (crap as the school run is not really possible on public transport) - trying to find alternatives in relatively rural North Yorks also not really that great and because DC private school the LA won't help with transport either (which is entirely understadable)

I have my neuro appointment on Thursday morning and am feeling quite anxious about it all, don't know whether I want them to find something they can treat or not either way I probably won't be driving for awhile Sad. (Frustrating as my new car - already paid for - arrived the day after my fit)

Currently feel fine, just really really tired.

Can we hold hands?

EastCoastDamsel · 29/11/2016 16:18

"too" not "two"

StressheadMcGee · 29/11/2016 22:46

Good luck for Thursday EastCoast, I had my first two in my sleep on Tuesday as well, am still waiting for the referral.

Hope you're feeling better today Ihad.

Ihadafit · 30/11/2016 02:37

Still waiting for appointments for EEG and MRI..

Best wishes for Thursday EastCoast.

Ihadafit · 30/11/2016 02:38

Best wishes to you too, McGee.

EastCoastDamsel · 30/11/2016 10:19

Waiting around is the hardest part! I can't properly concentrate on anything.

Have you chased up your referral McGee? A family friend who is a retired physician told me to ring the neurology department I was referred to if I hadn't heard anything after a week. Perhaps worth doing?

gingeroots · 30/11/2016 10:56

Sympathies to those who have had seizures and are waiting for tests and/or results .

I have very scary episodes - I don't loose consciouness but shake and jerk violently .And scream in panic to add heightened drama Blush.

Waiting for MRI results and further scans .Can't drive .Really empathise with mummyharvey " The biggest thing to get over is the fear & the disappointment each & every time".

Not really expecting any definitive results ,it's going to be one of those unexplained things I think .

But it's such a horrible thing ,heartfelt sympathy to all those with even worse symptoms than mine and especially those like EastCoast where not driving is a huge issue .Hope Thursday sheds light and offers treatment and control .

Thoughts to all .Ihad hoping your seizures have abated ,you must be so battered and exhausted .

PetalMettle · 30/11/2016 11:24

Hope all goes well today east coast.

EastCoastDamsel · 30/11/2016 11:34

That's so true. The fear and disappointment. ginger and mummyharvey

Aside from the 2 I had last Tuesday at work, I haven't had any more seizures (although I have been feeling pretty spaced out and exhausted).

I do however, have what I can only describe as panic attacks every time my body feels slightly different, my heart racing, feeling extremely anxious and on the brink of passing out.

Additionally I feel so let down by my body! I am not the type to get ill or take days off work, or become overwhelmed. I just get on with things. But now feel betrayed by my corporeal self.

I have worked so hard this last year to prove my value to the company I work for (it's complicated but being part-time and most WFH it feels like I have to be more productive and efficient) and now it is all up in the air.

Not being able to drive might mean that I lose my job or move to an entirely different and less demanding position when I've fought so hard to be considered for promotion, and that we have to take the children out of their school and move them to one closer...

So much. Sad

None of this is the end of the world, really, I know but Sad Sad Sad

charliethebear · 30/11/2016 11:54

So sorry you are going through this OP. It sounds horrible and really scary.
A seizure of more than 5 minutes/multiple seizures in a short time frame would be status epilepticus. Which is very serious. Did they give you medication to stop your 15 minute seizure? It is rare for a seizure to last more than 5 minutes.
Your care has been pretty poor. I'm wondering if the hospital think your not having seizures? Do you wet yourself during the seizures? Sorry if that is too personal. I cant believe your GP just dismissed you having a seizure
Take care of yourself, seizures are exhausting. I hope you get the answer you need. Flowers

gingeroots · 02/12/2016 12:05

Ihada how are you ?
EastCoast how did your appointment go ? Hope you're ok .

Ihadafit · 03/12/2016 02:10

No more fits. Have had a letter through with an EEG appointment for this coming week.

OP posts:
gingeroots · 03/12/2016 09:58

So glad no more fits .May I ask if EEG includes a sedated EEG as well as waking one ?

Sorry ,just being nosey and comparing to mine ! Blush

eastCoast hoping you're alright ,your earlier post where you said "none of this is the end of the world" really moved me .Maybe not the end of the world but v v dire Sad

Ihadafit · 03/12/2016 18:12

I have no idea, just says EEG on the letter and will last an hour.

Hope everything went well EastCoast.

OP posts:
gingeroots · 04/12/2016 13:32

Hi Ihadafit ,sorry to have been nosey Blush .Feel bad to have raised it in case you're worried about not being scheduled for one .But imagine they know quite a lot about yours asyou've had fits while in hospital ?

Appt letter says they do a sleep one if a wake one shows no abnormalaties .
Sleep one takes 3 hours and needs escort because of sedation .

Hope you and others are doing ok .Especially those just starting down this road .

Ihadafit · 05/12/2016 08:33

Ok, back from a GP appointment, and it transpires a neurological registrar has written expressing concern my seizures are dissociative in origin.

I've not met this registrar either. Any thoughts?

OP posts:
gingeroots · 05/12/2016 08:51

Have you had a copy of the letter ? There may just have been a passing reference to non epileptic seizures ? "Concern" seems an odd word IYSWIM . I can't think dissociative seizures are any more concerning than other kinds .Possibly less concerning than those caused by a tumour .

Also seems odd to express concern about the nature of the seizures before you've had your EEG .

Have you read this www.epilepsysociety.org.uk/non-epileptic-seizures#.WEUngPmLTIU ?

myoriginal3 · 05/12/2016 09:03

I really can't believe the treatment.
Has this reg recommended any further course of action?
Has the abdominal pain gone?

lifesucks75 · 05/12/2016 09:19

Hope you're ok op. I was diagnosed with epilepsy about three years ago now, I have the absences often but I only have a "big" seizure when im very very stressed. I can actually feel them coming, apparently it's different for everyone as the paramedics told me when I had them out the other week (i'm under a lot of stress at the moment). They did say don't hesitate to call them even if I don't need to go to hospital, they can at least check me over. To me its sort of like a buzzing in my head, like a panic attack but worse. I've bitten straight through my tongue twice, very painful. But the more I worry about having one, the more likely I will cause myself one, if that makes sense? It took me nearly a year to get diagnosed properly, I had to keep on and on at them asking if there were any cancellations to see the neurologist.

Ihadafit · 05/12/2016 09:37

No copy of letter, but am at clinic for EEG this week anyhow. It's the language utilised I found concerning.

I shall read your link thoroughly.

The abdominal pain is still present, not mitigated by opiates or naproxen. GP said to see how things go, pain is very severe too!

OP posts:
Maudlinmaud · 05/12/2016 09:55

Perhaps the reg saw you when you where very unwell and you don't recall seeing them. That would explain why they wrote to your gp. Hope the eeg goes ok, your hair will be a right mess after and I find when they ask you to breathe very fast it can make you feel a bit rough.

gingeroots · 05/12/2016 09:57

Ask for a copy of the letter .

For what it's worth I'm have a feeling that my attacks are going to be dx as non epileptic/dissociative . Goodness knows how such things are controlled though .

Your GP doesn't sound awfully helpful - "see how things go " ?????
