Urgent Help DD (12mo) temp sky high

dd not settled well, so took temp an hour ago and was 40.3. gave calpol but still temp is still 39.5-39.7

Have phoned NHS direct and am waiting for call back from nurse. Any tips to get her temp down in the mean time.

Strip her down to her nappy and sponge her with lukewarm (not cold) water and a flannel. Face and chest and back. It really is effective.
Also she is old enough for the appropriate dose of Nurofen for infants - which you can alternate safely with Calpol. For some reason it works better on some children than others for lowering fever - it always worked much better on dd than calpol ever did.

Oh yes - my sis swears by Baby Nurefen.

You can give the calpol and nurofen together - it works as well. We spent a whole night up and on the phone to NHS direct with ds2 and a raging temp. We couldn't shift it at all and when the GP came at about 4.30am he said give them both together - his temp was down 30 mins later.

You can alternate doses of Calpol and Nurofen but if you are struggling to get temp down, just use both together for one dose (unless contraindicated of course, like SS says - check the label).

Thanks Ladies. Temp now 38.3 and have just given nurofen much to d's disgust. CSWS is BFing her for fluids.

if we can get it down a bit more, then do you think it will be safe to put her back in her cot and if so with what clothing?

Just be aware that children can have febrile convulsions if their temerature gets too high. If it happens, don't panic, it's a result of temperature, probably nothing else.

Keep up with the wiping down and good luck. I don't suspect you'll have much sleep tonight.

Temp down to 37.4 - good stuff Nurofen! DD then decided that she wanted to play! NHS direct just called back and confirmed all of what you'd said.

We've put her back to bed in her pjs and 1 tog sleeping bag - hoping that won't be too much. She complained for a couple of minutes but has now settled off.

NHS direct said to take her temp again before we settle down for sleep, and then again in the night if we wake up.

She'd been fine all day btw - having a whale of a time at her birthday celebrations!

Just to let you know that dd was fine after we put her back to bed. Is up now and is now back to wreaking havoc as normal.
