DMSA scan

I have a 16 month old son who has had a urine infection and following an inconclusive ultrasound of his kidneys is now to have a DMSA scan. Has anyone else experienced this scan with such a young baby? I am worried that he will not stay still and will end up getting very upset. Any advice or information would be much appreciated!

Hi micky - sorry not able to help with the DMSA scan. My dd had renal ultrasound and and MCUG(?)scan at 12 months. Is DMSA the one where they have an injection and then some x-rays after about an hour? She was due to have this but the cause of her problems had been found and it wasn't required. My dd had sedation for her MCUG scan (it took about 15 minutes), have they given you an idea of how long he will have to stay still for?

Micky, ds2 had this when he was only a few months old. The staff were v good, ds was a bit surprised at the beginning, but there were no tears, and it was done very quickly. Hth.

Thanks for the reassurance Lou33. Yes, Luckymum, this is where they do an injection and then x rays after 3 hours. It means having to "kill" time for 3 hours which isn't that easy with a 16 month old and then hope that he stays still for half an hour whilst they x ray him! Fingers crossed and many thanks for your responses.
