Why is my toe nail black (gross picture alert)

I haven't injured it as far as I'm aware and usually have my nails painted, last time I repainted them which was probably a month ago I noticed it and have just seen it's still black. Any ideas?? Sorry for the gross picture

If it's a bruise it'll be there until it literally grows out...

You maybe have a fungal infection

I lost both big toenails after skiing this year. They went black like that first, although all over, not just on one side.

I went to the chiropodist after the first one came off. She said that there's always lots of lost toenails after the London marathon.

If it's fungal some of your toenails might also be yellowy and thickened

It is called a sub ungual haematoma. I have one too (pics added). After 9 weeks mine is fading slowly. It has been seen by two doctors. It won't grow out because the bruise isn't discolouring the nail but the skin underneath. If you are worried about the malignancy sub ungual melanoma that presents as a black stripe going up the nail including across the half moon bit. Yours is fine 😀

Almost certainly not this but get doc to check as there is such a thing as melanoma of the nail, although that is more like a line in your nail. Have a Google to see what you think.

Thanks all, definitely don't think I've banged it but it's a possibility. Just had abit of a panic seen as it's still there and wondered if it could be something sinister

Have you been walking around in shoes tight around your toes?
I walked around London for hours in ballet type flats and got a toe nail like yours.
