Eye blister?

I keep getting an eye blister every now and then in the same spot. Has anyone else heard of this and is it safe? I mentioned it to an optician once but as it wasn't there he couldn't say what it was. It feels like there's grit in my eye when it appears.

I have had an eye ulcer once which was extremely painful and hampered my sight. Don't know if it is similar to what you mean, but I went to the emergency eye hospital about mine and had to have a long course of drops to get rid of it.

If it's on the white of the eye it could be due to an allergic reaction if it's quite big (called chemosis), if it's small Is probably a fluid filled cyst, if it goes away on it's own prob doesn't matter but if it comes and stays maybe you would have to be drained.

Is it anything to do with hayfever? What do you do to make it go away?

Easy to treat with antibiotic drops or eye wash...

Ulcers are usually on the cornea (which covers the coloured (iris) part and are very painful in the vast majority of cases, and they can be sight threatening. Chemosis and cysts usually just feel a bit like there is something in your eye, but are not agonisingly painful.

What I would do, is next time it appears, phone your optometrist and ask if you can come in the same day for him/her to look at it so you can find out what it is. They will look at it on a microscope and probably put a drop of yellow dye in (doesn't sting!). Then at least you will get to the bottom of it and they will be able to refer you if neccessary.

prune - you are so right; my ulcer was extremely painful and I woke one morning with no sight in one eye at all - luckily it is now okay bit took a while to improve.

I agree - you need to get your eye seen whilst it is there.

If it is an allergy the normal anti-allergy meds will help as will cold compresses. If it is a cyst anti allergy stuff won't make a blind bit of difference. A stye is on the edge of the eyelid, near the root of the eyelashes and not on the eyeball itself. There are loads of things it could be depending on where it is, so go get it looked at next time it pops up!

Juniper, you should see your optician or GP next time it appears - if it is reappearing in the same place, the problem is obviously deepseated and should be looked at. Anything unusual with your eye should be checked - sight is very easily damaged. Do you wear contact lenses - there is a slightly higher risk of ulcers which must be treated properly. These can also occur from a fungal infection (more common with contact lens wearers who swim in them)or a parasitic infection, though usually this would not subside and reoccur and is more commonly picked up abroad.
The grit feeling is normal for any thing in your eye - take it for the warning it is

Cheers prune. Was a few monthsago now, but had to have drops hourly for first few day and took about a month for all the pain/itchiness to go. I ignored it for first couple of days as my eyes often itch and get sore with hayfever, but this got worse until one morning I woke and couldn't see at all in right eye - couldn'teven read top line of eye test Was very scary. Caused by bacteria from contact lenses Have daily one snow so less chance of getting it.

Terrible terrible pain from that, I nearly passed out - I have NEVER fallen asleep in my lenses since! No matter how drunk I am, I always get my lenses out and cleaned

does it look like yellow jelly that starts in te corner of your eye then moves across??

I get this with an allergy to cats.....

Cheers for the replies. It's on the white of the eye and always in the same place. I do get allergies and have just started with hayfever, also get allergies to cats,dust...

It's gone down a bit now so I'll see how it goes. I have had the eye drop stuff in b4 for pain behind my eye and a full check up which was clear and I mentioned the blister then but he wasn't concerned.

I'll try to get to see someone next time it flares up.
