Painful foot lump with no injury?

Hoping someone can offer some helpful suggestions.
I have a sore foot, it's swollen on the top of my foot near my toes. I struggle to walk on it, but the pain eases with rest and Ibuprofen.

It's been sore for 5 days now and is getting worse rather than better.

I'm waiting to see a GP. I'm not registered with one yet. I did go to a minor injuries unit, as the pain was really unbearable. They did an X-ray, said it was fine and sent me on my way.

Any ideas what could be wrong whilst I wait? or what I can do to ease the pain?

Could you see a podiatrist?

Are you wear footwear that is aggravating a minor complaint . Try changing your usual footwear for something lighter to wear on your foot .

Is the area red? Have you had a cut or insect/animal bite in that area at all? If it is red draw round the area, if the red area spreads it could be an infection that needs antibiotic treatement.

Is it hot and swollen? Could be gout, easily kept away with one tablet a day, but you need to see a GP. Hope you get it treated soon.

When have you got the apointment?
I don't want to worry you but my mum had exactly the same thing at the start of this year and has been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, it is managable but at times can be very painful. hers started very quickly and felt like a knock or a bruise on the top of her foot just as you described. The cold weather makes if feel worse and it can get quite swollen at times.

Thanks all. It feels like as if I'be dropped something heavy on it. The area is swollen with the middle of my foot hurting the most and the sides realitvely pain free. It's warm to touch compared with the other foot but not very red.
I've not had any bites or scratches to the area.
I was thinking gout at first, there is a family history, but I'm young(ish), not overweight, I rarely drink or eat any of the other trigger foods. Also the pain isn't excruciating, like I'd imagine a gout attack would be.

I usually wear trainers or boots. Neither seem to make the pain better or worst. Just sore getting the footwear on.

How would I go about seeing a podiatrist?

DH has inherited gout, still gets it occasionally despite losing weight and cutting down on trigger foods since diagnosis. It usually starts with a twinge so he can catch it before it gets really bad, lots of ibuprofen.
