We have tried our usual sudacrem, and Drapoline to no effect. We are also giving him plenty of air time, despite the inevitable accidents (something has upset his stomach, hence the soreness I think)
Any way, what can you recommend please.

Hope he sleeps well, and good luck tomorrow. If you do take him to the docs and they suspect an infection do ask them to swab him (just a cotton wool on a stick thing). DD was given canasten for thrush and I asked for swabs as I had been back and forth and it turned out she had a hideous and weird infection that could only be cured by disgusting oral antibiotics. They called me at home and got me in right away when they found out . I am sure it won't be that bad though. Good Luck

overrun, my lot always had hideous nappy rash when they teethed but even now they get it when they have a cold.

Metanium can be very very good but it must be used correctly. Its like wet chalk and you must only use a tiny dot.

Put a bit the size of half a pea on the tip of your finger (even that migh be too much). Dot it over his clean bottom and pat to spread it about. It should look like you have dusted his bottom in yellow talc. It must be thin to let the skin breathe. It will stick to the open bits so don't try to clean those bits off too thoroughly.

I keep a tube always and, for me, it has always worked extremely well and helps instantly.

You're not having an easy time are you? Hows the sleeping? Hows the help? Hope you're ok.

Hi every one, he is a lot better today, have soaked his bum, tried to get some of the creams, but couldn't get them in Sainsburys, and gave up driving at that point, as it was a nightmare in the snow. Thanks for all your help

Oh good news Overrun . Air is the best thing and seems to be working for you.

sahmtotwo · 09/02/2007 19:37

Hope he is a lot better now.

The best thing I have found is a couple of handfuls of oats in the foot of tights. Put it in the bath when you are running it and then pop baby in. You can get in with him if you wish, it does absolute wonders for the skin

Overrun · 09/02/2007 19:39

sahmtotwo - I had not heard of that before, you learn something new every day i guess

I also find the metanium good for clinging to - and therefore stopping you from irritating when you wipe - the really sore bits.

Has he by any chance had antibiotics recently - for or for future reference, thrush appears as as red shiny spots that can be massed together an become open sores and so mistaken for ordinary nappy rash. DS1 has it a lot since he was OD'd on antibiotics when he had pneumonia.

Offer him the cooled vag water after you have cooked veg or boil up some pearl barley. You will have to keep adding water until it is quite soft. Keep the liquid to cool & give him that, it will help neutralize his system & stop the wee/poo being so acidic so it won't agrevate (sp) as much.

sandcastles · 10/02/2007 11:09

cooled VEG water

Skyler · 10/02/2007 16:32

Sorry but PMSL at vag water

another vote for metanium

3andnomore · 10/02/2007 18:05

Awww, your poor son....you have heard of all the different creams already and have non to add.
As for salt water...it used to be believed that salt and sugar would promote cell groth/healing, but has since been found not to do anything (it used to be done in Hospital when I was still a trainee Nurse, etc...but is not done anymore now due to the findings)
Maybe using some cooled Camilla tea infusion would be a good idea for cleaning
As for the Breath holding it is awful isn't it, and no matter how often they do it, one never quite gets used to it...es used to do it and ys, too. es has outgrown it a long time ago, when he was about 4 and ys hasn't had any episodes for a good half year now, thank god.

dollyk · 10/02/2007 18:24

I used a cream on my kids that has been going for years its not sold in the baby area but most chemists sell it, its called fullers earth cream it is so good and clears the rash up really quickly

sahmtotwo · 10/02/2007 18:45

How is he now? Any improvement? What did you try in the end?

Lullabyloo · 10/02/2007 18:50

poor little thing
i found Weleda Calendula nappy cream was miraculous...nothing else worked at all.

itsmeNDP · 10/02/2007 18:56

Wipes are evil things. I used them a couple of times on DD when she was small and it was like an instant reaction. Sore, red, tight skin. Have used cotton wool and water ever since. Nappy rash I just used metanium as it was quite dry and stuck where it was supposed to be

3andnomore · 10/02/2007 19:55

To wipes, I personally can only use sensitive skin ones on my kids, so, no scent etc..., had a problem with the asda sensitive ones at one point, but tey are alright again now....at that time others had probs too with tem, so, maybe they had tried a new recipe and then saw it wasn't as good!
Simple wipes are quite good...but broken skin is always different to healthy if sensitive skin, of course!
