"But pregnancy advice groups said the figures probably reflected poor access to contraceptive services"

What utter tosh

You can buy condoms in many loos in clubs and pubs. In any chemist or 24hour shop.

You have access to family planning clinics and doctors with free contraception

You can buy the morning after pill over the counter ffs

Shouldn't people take a bit more responsibility and get themselves to these places and get some bloody contraception?

you can always find a chemist open or buy condoms from elsewhere!

OP posts:
dejags · 08/02/2007 11:40

Agreed.

McDreamy · 08/02/2007 11:41

So what do you think the reason for the increase is? (Not being arguementative - genuine question )

katzg · 08/02/2007 11:42

i wonder if acceptance of abortion is a reason.

CountessDracula · 08/02/2007 11:42

Presumably more shagging without contraception, so I guess laziness or stupidity or both??

What I find scary is that they have also exposed themselves to a host of diseases, which are also on the rise.

charliecat · 08/02/2007 11:43

The amount of STDS must be going through the roof as well then.

CountessDracula · 08/02/2007 11:44

I presume that sex education in schools is a lot better than when I was young! They can't not know that they need contraception

I have nothing against abortion btw

I just think that people should be a bit more responsible

It depends where you live CD. You can't always find a chemist open over the Christmas holidays if you live in the sort of arse-end of the universe places I do.

CountessDracula · 08/02/2007 11:44

Yes but you could plan in advance, you know, like buying extra milk when the shops are shut for a couple of days

OP posts:
Miaou · 08/02/2007 11:46

Yet another example of our "don't take personal responsibility, blame someone else" culture.

Caligula · 08/02/2007 11:46

Well yes you could, but the whole point of emergency contraception is that it's for when you haven't planned! (or for when the condom breaks or something)

southeastastra · 08/02/2007 11:46

people have sex younger and the media is saturated with it

bundle · 08/02/2007 11:49

Over the counter the MAP is expensive, so not readily available for everyone

CountessDracula · 08/02/2007 11:49

So what would be wrong with keeping a thing of morning after pills in your bedside table?

OP posts:
purplemonkeydishwasher · 08/02/2007 11:49

should we really be surprised when the rate of STIs is going up as well?

Imafairy · 08/02/2007 11:49

Agree CD - it never ceases to amaze me how many young people quite happily have sex with multiple partners and think that contraception doesn't really matter. Some of those people must be rancid! (I have to qualify my research as being based on my slightly strange addiction to Jeremy Kyle while I was on maternity leave! )

bundle · 08/02/2007 11:50

cd, recent discussion on that, on woman's hour

katzg · 08/02/2007 11:51

i think the safe sex message is nto as strong as when i was at school. In the late 80's and early 90's AIDs and HIV was going to wipe us all out, this must have had an impact on the number of people practising safe sex.

McDreamy · 08/02/2007 11:52

STD's are also on the increase - no surprise really!

Gingerbear · 08/02/2007 11:52

Condoms used to be hard to get hold of. The stereotype of young lad blushing at pretty girl at Boots counter being to scared to ask for condoms and ending up with cough sweets has long gone. You can get them everywhere these days. It is the socially responsible thing to do.

However, I think Katzg has hit on something there - abortion is not so shameful as it once was.

oliveoil · 08/02/2007 11:52

Also a chemist can refuse to give you the pill on religious grounds so if you find one that is open, it is not necessarily the case you will be given it.

Bobalina · 08/02/2007 11:57

I think it has alot to do with binge-drinking. It's not that people don't know of the risks involved of not using contraception - it's because they're too drunk to care alot of the time.

CountessDracula · 08/02/2007 11:58

Well we all used to binge drink for england
it was required of one

It is crap that binge drinking is a new thing
