"But pregnancy advice groups said the figures probably reflected poor access to contraceptive services"

What utter tosh

You can buy condoms in many loos in clubs and pubs. In any chemist or 24hour shop.

You have access to family planning clinics and doctors with free contraception

You can buy the morning after pill over the counter ffs

Shouldn't people take a bit more responsibility and get themselves to these places and get some bloody contraception?

edam - agreed!! sex is how people get pregnant - not some terrible depraved evil activity... it happens pretty bloody easily to many many people... and yet, as soon as it does we are damned no matter what we decide!

Caligula · 08/02/2007 13:59

edam and slug, I think women feel bad about abortions if they were ambiguous about having them in the first place. If they knew for sure 100% that they didn't want the baby, and they weren't co-erced into it by economic / social circumstances, then they don't feel bad about them ime.

SenoraPostrophe · 08/02/2007 13:59

ooh yes and agree entirely with MI, slug et al.

I also resent the way that the anti-abortion lobby use the term "pro-life", as if those of us who support abortion rights were anti-life.

kateandfelicity · 08/02/2007 14:00

Caligula,

I found out i was pregnant, exdp did not want the pregnancy to continue, neither did my parents.

They tried to give me an ultimatum on having an abortion.

I realised that I would be able to support baby myself, and frankly told them all where to stuff it.

Having his involvement did not really have any influence on me personally.. my decision to have dd was very strongly influenced by whether I could do this myself, with no ones help.

Caligula · 08/02/2007 14:00

How ridiculous to only give 30 condoms a month. What if you want to have sex three times a day every day?

NappiesGalore · 08/02/2007 14:01

well ss, i think that very simple measure may well be very effective actually.

NappiesGalore · 08/02/2007 14:04

lol calig! yes, 30 condoms wouldnt have gotten me through the month in the good old days
may well last me about a decade at todays rate... but

expat 84% of them were carried out by Marie Stopes on behalf of the NHS

NappiesGalore · 08/02/2007 14:19

der.... thats madness.

i think theyve all gone and left us now SS anyway! and im off out in a tick too...

footinslug · 08/02/2007 14:20

do they still hand out those extra thick condoms or have they moved on since then?

NappiesGalore · 08/02/2007 14:21

i think the answer is more homosexuality.

for fun and careless kicks, stick to your own gender, then no-one ends up at the abortion clinic.

'course, we'd have to try the other team for settling down and having families... or not if youre happy as you are and are deft with a turkey baster

I wonder if they put that view across in school sex ed Nappies (about homosexuality).

NappiesGalore · 08/02/2007 14:29

maybe they should!! save a lot of bother all round, dont you think?? id have done more girls when i was young, if id have known where to find/how to approach potential willing partners

Heathcliffscathy · 08/02/2007 14:33

nappies. agree wholeheartedly with your posts.

footinslug · 08/02/2007 14:34

I would hope they did nappies, but I'm not so sure.

lol at finding partners - I know exactly what you mean!

Aloha · 08/02/2007 14:36

I'm not sure why people think there should be so many other forms of contraception? Either you physically stop the sperm meeting the egg or you use hormones. We are designed to reproduce so there is no other way to prevent it. I suspect that there may be a highly effective spermicidal gel one day, but doubt that would be super-effective due to user error/dose. There is constant research into the male pill, with talk of a patch/pill combo proving successful in clinical trials. It is more complex than the female pill. Also, IME, women tend to prefer to be in charge of their fertility and if they are not the ones using contraception, they like to be able to see that the man is not going to get them pregnant - ie wearing a condom.

Why are abortion rates up? more drinking, more casual sex, easier access & less stigma around abortion, women staying single longer and men not sticking around to support women who get pregnant, an anti-baby culture & fear that having a baby will take away a woman's career and independence...and the sheer blooming difficulty of getting a doctors appointment!

bundle · 08/02/2007 14:38

there's some research in the states into reversible contraception for men involving removable silicone plugs

3andnomore · 08/02/2007 14:40

ader, I googled it, and indeed, you are correct, all the sites coming up wiht google search suggest what you are saying, but they are also all american sites...hm....could it be that they use a differnet kind, I don't know!

NotAnOtter · 08/02/2007 14:53

I dont buy it and though i see your argument Sophable i think you are being naive

Aloha - I dont get that argument either - that a grown woman cannot get the MOP by any means 72 hours after having unprotected sex

Contraception is not that ineffectual....One has sex - unprotected or with failed contraception - you have at least 72 hours which is three long days to go to a clinic /doctors /shop and get yourself sorted

If all these women having terminations are in their 30'n then can someone please explain to me WHY?
Are you saying that after an 'accident' they do not know about emergency contraception?

I think to speak of the psycological damage a woman suffers as being all part of 'propaganda' is outrageous
