Coil or Steralisation

Hi, need some advice here please!! I am due to have my coil removed. Although when I had it fitted initially I suffered with horrendous stomach pains they did go and my periods have been brilliant since - no pain, on time and very light)

However I do not want anymore children (four already and biological clock I think has stopped!!) so I dont know if I should go for a steralisation where I wont have anymore issues with contraception but my periods could well start being horrendous again or do I have another coil fitted for five years and put up with the stomach cramps for the first year but have no period pain issues..

I just dont know what to do?????

Were you on the hormone IUD?

I have a mirena which for me has worked a treat. I am planning to have it removed soon as we are going to try for number 3. After no 3 is born I want it put straight back in. I have no periods and the thought of going back to them fills me with dread so I would opt for a mirena again but it's not for everyone.

Yes I think it was the Mirena Coil (not sure but it five years ago I had it fitted!).

You may find that swapping the coil over doesn't cause the same cramping as initially.

Blandmum · 06/02/2007 14:24

I think only you can make the judgement.

I've been sterilised, and it was fine, I never have to worry about contraception ever again. That is a good feeling! But so is having light periods. Weere they bad before you had the coil?

You have to weigh up benefit of having contraception sorted for ever vs lighter periods

expatinscotland · 06/02/2007 14:29

do a search.

some folks have experienced horrendous periods after being sterilised.

i'm of the 'if ain't broke, don't fix it' state of mind.

if the mirena works for you, stick with it and enjoy your period-free life.

My periods were bad before I had the coil fitted and I dont know if I could go through that all again! Lizs maybe your right about the initial pain.

martianbishop how was your steralisation when you had it done? I here so many horror stories you start to think shall I or shant I?

I am not usually this indecisive honest!

Mine was less traumatic second time around although bleeding was a little heavier in January (refitted November) so I guess it still has to settle in a bit .

Blandmum · 06/02/2007 15:08

I was sterilised when I had my ds (elective section and they were 'in there' anyway)

I've had no problems

Bovvy · 06/02/2007 15:09

Thanks everyone!! I have made up my mind to go with the coil again. Maybe a steralisation next time.

Have appreciated all your comments.

Cheers!!
