My closest friend is going to the nurse on Wednesday because she's really suffering. Her symptons are; irregular bleeding and spotting, wildly varying cycle lengths, weight gain, bad cramping, nausea, tiredness..just not feeling right, she says. Her and her dh have been ttc for around 6/8 months (he works away so it's not every month) and it seems that since they threw away the condoms these symptoms have begun.

She's always had outrageously heavy periods and dreadful cramps but she was regular as clockwork and only suffered the cramps for a day or two each month - now it's pretty constant through the month, and it sounds like she's always spotting. She's never been on the pill or used any other contraception apart from condoms. And she has never had unsafe sex, ever.

Any ideas? I'm so worried about her and she's worried herself sick. Her aunt (by marriage) has just died of ovarian cancer at 50 so she's now worried she's got that too. She's too scared to research the internet in case of what she might find. Oh, and she's up-to-date on her smear tests - last one was about 6 months ago.

Any words of wisdom would help. Thanks..

She needs to have some initial blood tests. One possible cause could be underactive thyroid which can be quicklly fixed.

Could it be a polyp or fibroids or similar? I had an internal scan last week and found that i have a polyp which needs to be removed - this wasn't picked up 6 months ago with an external scan.

However, i read up on it and the symptoms for polyps are irregular bleeding and spotting, painful sex and trouble conceiving (as the polyp blocks the path of the sperm). I didn't have any of those symptoms but hellish periods like your friend's. Apparently the nurse should be able to feel a polyp or blockage if there is one.

I'm having the polyp removed in about 6 weeks and apparently it is a simple procedure. I hope your friend is better soon, she must be feeling awful.
