Circumcision doctor in South Devon

Hi there. Dont want to go into the why's and when's, but does anyone know of a doctor that does non-religious circumcisions on infants in the South Devon area? I have contacted BUPA and the Nuffield hospitals, but none of them can help me. Anyone with some advice?

Your GP should be able to refer you for a medical circ- do you mean non-medical AND non-religious?

Even if this is just a "cosmetic" procedure, your GP should be able to point you in the right direction.

Thanks tissy - have asked my midwife (baby due in 2 weeks) and she cant help me. Will try my GP - didnt think of him!

Know it can be done for religious reasons, but because we want it done for personal reasons, no-one seems to be able to help us. (that and the private places dont operate on children under 3)

hmm- won't go into the "personal reasons"- we have had several, erm, "discussions" about circs on MN!The reason why many private places won't do it under 3 is that anaesthetics are MUCH safer on children of that age. Yes, it can be done under local (and most religious circs are), but I think you will struggle to find a "proper" surgeon to do it under local. Does it really have to be done when the baby is newborn?

Why would you want to do it under a general? They can inject the area so that the penis is totally numb. He won't feel a thing. Some even sleep through it.

Have done quite a bit of research on the pain side of the operation (as OBVIOUSLY want the little guy to feel as little pain as humanly possible!!)

Apparently when they are babies they dont feel the pain as intensely as they would when they are older and when the do feel the pain, they cant identify where the pain actually is and somehow forget about it more quickly. I have also read that most babies only cry for about 10 minutes and then forget about it!

uwila - thanks for that! Gave them a call and they only operate in the London area and not sure we will be up for a 4 hour trip in the early weeks. At least we know it is an option - thanks!
