Cleft Palate operation - any experiences?

DS2 (6 mths) has a cleft palate and is due to have an operation to fix it in the next month. He looks so healthy and happy it's easy to forget about it but the operation looms ever closer. Has anyone else gone through this? Can they give me any pointers? I've been told things like I need to have him off bottles and onto beakers - he's only 6 months old with no sucking ability - how do I do that? How do the babies cope with the operation? I know I'm going to hate seeing him under the anestethic, poor baby.

I'd really like to know about how successful the operation was for people. I have a dread of DS having awful trouble with his speech and being bullied in school - can anyone tell me if their childrens speech was ok after having the operation?
The first few months were so hard, but he's really thriving now - it's hard to remember that he has more troubles ahead
