Hi

You may have read my worries about ds - well he is no better today and have had to the doctors and it is hand, foot and mouth disease that he has - doc says his immune system will fight it. Im fine with that.

BUT he has had a temperature of 39 all day despite nurofen and calpol given at the proper intervals all day - he had his last lot of calpol at 3.15 and his temp has just been 39.7.

He is very drowsy and slept on and off all day - thing is not sure whether to worry or ring nhs direct as Ive seen the doctor twice today who didnt seem too concerned about his high temp but its another 4 hours until he can have more calpol and Im concerned that the calpol and nurofen isnt helping

thats odd for nad foot and mouht to be so ill isn;t it?
My dd had it at 13 mths and was fit as a fiddle, not poorly at all...
But my tips for cooling down, which come from when dd had measles and drugs did not help...
Damp (well wrung out) sheet lain over them (very good esp in this heat) a fan to keep new air over them (but not when they are wet or they may get a chill...
Sponging the groin area (no idea why it just works)
Is he taking fluids ok? weeing normally? the docs only worry if they are vomiting up a lot, if they have a fever but are drinking a bit and keeping it down, then they tend to be pretty blase...
Did doc check ears and throat properly?
Hope he feeling better soon becca...

The doc checked ears but not throat. He is a renowned crap doctor - (got struck off a while ago but is now back seemingly)

He isnt really drinking (has had a few mls today though) and hasnt eaten since sunday.

His breath really stinks, im wondering if this might mean dehydration?

Im just a bit panicky I think as my DD ended up in hospital when a temperature got out of control as I presumed she would be fine.

Thanks for replying

Sorry to hear ds is still a bit poorly. Do you have a local children's hospital or a walk-in centre you could go to, to put your mind at rest at the very least?

mears · 09/06/2004 00:19

His temperature should start to go down after 48 hours becca. remember that a temp is actually a good thing - it is the body's way of killing off an enemy bacteria or virus. If he is still poorly after 48 hours he needs to be reviewed by doc again. Remembrer to give paracetamol/nurofen regularly, even if temp is normal overnext 3 days.

Becca, 39 degrees at early age is very dangerous because of the risk of a seizure, I would ring NHS direct. Something that may help is to put him in a tepid water bath for about 15 min, or at least applying a compress to his forehead or tummy until it goes down a bit. Try to sleep in the same room or where you can hear his movements. Good luck.

Becca, hope the babe is better today. This is a link to signs of dehydration.

Just thought I would update here - DS just got out of hospital yesterday - turned out he had a chest infection, ear infection and water infection. He has been on the drip with fluids and antibiotics and tube fed for a few days as he was dehydrated and refusing to eat or drink! He had to have oxygen for a couple of days as he was struggling and his saturation or something was low.

Initially they thought it may have been meninigitis as he got much worse quickly on Saturday but that was ruled out on Monday.

It seems that his immunity was lowered by the hand foot and mouth and he was susceptible to these extra infections.

He is doing much better today and his chest is starting to clear.

Thanks for taking the time to give me advice - its so good to be back home

Becca
