Is this normal? I've already taken him to the docs when he had a very bad cold with the cough - they just said virus, wait it out. But it's been three weeks now and whilst he doesn't cough during the day, at night the hacking cough is heartbreaking. Is this normal? BTW, no temp

Coughing esp at night can sometimes be a sign of asthma, although i think asthma is very over diagnosed.
2 of my children had night time coughing big time, and ventolin really helped.
Central heating doesn`t help much this time of year.
Try using extra blankets instead if you can and lots of moisture.
I found steam worked wonders-but lots of it.If you have a steam sterilizer try taking the lid off it and it will fill the room nicely !
Steamy bathroom and lavender bath.
I burn Karvol and put a few drops on a hankie tied to the cot.
Elevate the cot a little at the head with books.
Frequent drinks.
Have a chat with gp or health visitor and esp. mention the nightime coughing. At 16 months he might be willing to try some ventolin syrup or an inhaler via a soft mask if all else fails-if it works then you can keep it up.
I never treated my dd as asthmatic-she just had a night cough that was best treated with ventolin.
Also check any allergens-do you have dogs or something that could trigger the coughing ?
Hope you have at least picked one useful tip and that your little one gets better.

Thanks Mooshy, Already have been tilting the cot up, but will try the other things. Have already used up a bottle of Tixylix!
